d really like to buy some new bolts for this area.

However i dont fancy paying Toyota price as i suspect i could get a higher quality product for same money.

The main issue, stress in this area.

Anyone know anything about the strength/quality these bolts need to be made out of / from to be safe to use in this area.

For example if i just purchased a stainless steel M14 bolt for hub to suspension area is that ok or doies it need to be a certain quality of steel ???

If you get 10.9 tensile you can't go wrong really. I've only used 12.9 on the hardtop fixings, but fear it's a tad overkill.

Anything structural on these is fine pitch anyway, so that combined with high tensile 10.9 = pretty strong. Using 12.9 can start to get expensive.

Personally I'd only use them for none structural application. I'd want at least an 8.8 spec, preferably 10.9 for piece of mind. Again, depends on which bolts you're looking at.

Check out Kays Fasteners on the bay of E, look under high tensile.

Edit: Majority of my hardware is new, mostly OEM when it comes to chassis/susp, so if you need specific sizes just post in here & I'll put up measurements/thread pitch.

Bad place to try and save money IMHO.
Unless like J03 you really know what to look for.

not a case of trying to save money id rather have stainless but need to check im getting right stuff

Call the midlife!

It's a question of getting the right thickness too, I know when I mullered one of mine it was difficult getting a temporary, non standard replacement that didn't rattle in the hole due to the difference in thread and shank.

There's nothing special about the bolt sizes really, all are metric M8/M10/M12/M14 etc, just in some instances where the threads are finer pitch & not readily available from your average hardware place.

I only ordered a full set of OEM as I didn't have the previous fixings to take measurements from. As above if there's any sizes you need just let me know & I'll put some specs up  ;)

That fair enough must have glossed over that when I read it.

im looking at zinc plated stuff and stainless id guess they still end up fouling up ?

Understand the temptation to go stainless but I'd be wary of doing a straight swap without a good grasp on the nature/scale of the loads on a particular bolt.
2004 Silver. Stock(ish).

There are many grades and types of 'stainless'.

These bolts (when taking thread pitch, plain section length and thread length into consideration and hardness) are quite specific and not readily available off the shelf from a fastening factor.

This is one (rare) case where I'd go Toyota.

Jo3.

Out of interest the new bolts you got from Toyota do they have any stamping on end (socket end) as this often give bolt info.

I've got a full set of new ones and my old ones sat on the bench waiting to be fitted, you can borrow what you want for research purposes, taking to suppliers etc. Just don't try fitting them and kill them![emoji23]

I agree with this, stainless steel is more brittle so may not be suitable for this application.

They put dots on the heads but that's about how much camber they'll give if I remember rightly?
