Don't know if it is THE answer, but there are some rubber bushes at the gear box end of the gear cable which can go "off" with age.

These can be replaced with new or a metal bush from  m http://www.speed-source.net/ m

Others might be able to add to this, to say whether such a failure would affect just one gear change, or whether its felt more across the box.

Having said that I think most of us (I hope I am not speaking out of turn here) have experienced some baulking in a gear change from time to time.

i find it hard to change down a gear when the revs are high, like to overtake on a motorway i might drop it down to 4th booasting the revs to about 5000.  its quite tricky to get in, which i always put down to me changing at completly the wrong speed.

Hmm..  would this explain an increase in force needed to select 1st accompanied by a rubbery squeek?

Perhaps, if the squeak comes from the engine compartment.

If it comes from the gear lever cage area, there are a number of ball joints and levers there, any one of which may be a bit dry on the grease.
