The original radio has been working fine, as I was driving home today the door speaker was not working, what's the first thing I should check please.

Ardent

All connections
Chaffing of wires
Balance /fade have somehow inadvertently been adjusted and only sending signal to one side. (unlikely)

nimrod

I thought it might be the speaker balance will check tomorrow, had to read the manual to remind me how to do it.

BTW I meant driver side speaker not working so if the balance hasn't been altered thinking it might be the speaker connection with all the door opening and closing, can the speaker grill section be removed without having to remove the whole door card.

Ardent

Hoping I'm wrong, but going to say no.

No, the speaker grill is plastic welded onto the rest of the door card so you will have to remove the whole doorcard to have a look at what is going on.

Maybe a good idea to sound deaden the doors while you are in there so at least there will be a positive side to whatever you find!

Door card removal is easy once you know what you are doing so try to watch some youtube videos as things like the door handle backing plates are not easy until you know the way to remove.

Both door speakers use the same connector (although you can't swap the speakers physically) but that's the easiest way to rule out a wiring issue.

On mum's car the driver's speaker just died. Nothing visibly wrong with it. Grabbed a replacement from a breaker and wrapped it in a carrier bag before fitting in case water ingress was the cause.

Had this on the MR2 support polo.
The wires running into the door had worn through.
Only found this out after taking all the door card out.
Which was totally unnecessary.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

I didn't mention the tweeter speaker is also not working, which makes me think it's wire or connection.

Good to know if not I would had tried to force it off, it looked like it was clipped on.

Just removed door card, the connection all seem to be connected, all seem plugged in at the back of the radio, the radio speaker balance was in the middle I also noticed the tweeter is working, I'm thinking new speaker.

@nimrod, on je72's 'Intermittent starting thread' the opinion is that there is a continuity problem in the wiring loom.
Similarly, if both ends of the speaker wiring are connected that does not mean that the wiring between the ends is continuous.
I suggest you check for continuity before buying a replacement speaker.

Carolyn

My thought (i'm no audio expert):

As I recall, the tweeter is simply wired in parallel to the main speaker and that wiring is within the door.

That means the signal is getting to the inside of the door, which points to a poor connection on the main speaker or (as you suggest) a duff speaker.

Thanks for that, might leave it until Monday, the college I work at has a motor vehicle department they should be able to test.

Take both cards off and try the passenger speaker on the driver's side. Half an hour's work tops.

nimrod

Thanks to Dick the new speaker arrived I plugged it in and it worked, my gamble worked out this time but not always, thanks for your advice.
