Then the cam is not ground correctly.

8 thou is only .2 mm.  Interesting!

That's the way I'm thinking, assuming the valves are as ordered they're actually 0.05mm longer than standard so certainly shouldn't cause the issue, they were a lot harder to compress but are stronger, dual springs so wasn't unexpected.
Fingers crossed it's the wrong grind on the cams as that should be a straightforward fix, although it'll put things back even further.

Do you mean the springs are longer or the valves?

You can double-up feeler gauges and measure the actual gap.  I bet it's 1 mm out....

CNC grinding....

GIGO.

Off the manufacturer's website the valves should be longer than standard.
The irony is I avoided Cat cams due to issues of unreliable grinds on some reviews I read, Crower had nothing but positive feedback.
I just gave up last night and locked the door on it all.

Ah... so it's also possible the valves are too short.

Yep.  Got to measure one.

I don't blame you for shutting the door and walking away.  Often the best method!!

Hahahahaha! One day, when the insurance is viable I'm sure it will be, although I don't imagine it resembles it's insurance listing even now but that's his circus I've warned him often enough.

If I have time tonight I'll pull a valve and measure the cam lobes but I'm supposed to out dancing and I need to make myself less Shrek-like for that![emoji23]

Leave it for a couple of days... then you can come at it 'fresh'.

I find that really helps me when something is problematic.

Agreed, I've got a pair of brand new Toyota handbrake cables to fit so that should take my mind off the possible dodgy valves/cams.

He's no different to most his age but I keep telling him not to draw the wrong attention with stupid stuff like number plate on the dashboard, it just asks for the rest to be looked at, or the insurance to walk away from any claims.

Who'd like to read the measurement off for me please?
Just to see if it's the same as I got rather than me looking for the "right" reading.

I take that back.

I just looked at the way your vernier lines up at the top.

88.5!!

That's nearer what I'm reading, I had around 8 and three quarters so I'm happy that it's not the valves.

I just checked the standard Toyota dimension for the exhaust valves. (From the manual)

Std height:88.69

Minimum height: 88.39.

Looks like you're missing the extra .5??

What strange verniers. You read it on the 0 mark of the lower measure?

I've hardly ever used them to be honest, I inherited them by default and have never found them particularly easy to read, hence the question.

The 0 aligns between 88 and 89.
So it's 88 and a bit.
Then look to the right on the scale for lines to coincide, for the bit.
In this case alignment is at 5 or 6 difficult with photo.
So the measurement is 88.5 or perhaps 88.6.
Difficult to judge via www.

Did you zero them before starting?

If the verniers are to be believed it's quite possible but it could also be down to my poor measuring skills.
But potentially missing .05 from the Supertech size aside the cams should work with standard length valves and that measurement is near enough to standard for me to expect them to work together. If you know what I mean?

Agree on the poor angle of the photo, it was more to sanity check how I was reading the same way as yourself. The main scale halfway between 88-89 so in my eyes 88.5 then lined up square on the 5 on the second scale so 88.55.
But the valve had dropped out twice already while trying to take the photo so it's possible it had slipped again when I put it down the third time.
Either way it's near enough for me.

half a millimeter is lot!

can't see buckets taking that up.

I'd ask Crower how long the exhaust valves need to be according to them.

Then you'll know.

Measuring the cam is tricky without a lathe/v-blocks and a dial gauge. even then you've got to know what you're doing.

PM me for data sheet....

I know what you're saying re the half millimetre, I've just tried the cam again with one of the old valves and the gap is the same so I'm still leaning towards the cams being wrong.
