So the old valve is the same as the new one?

Where's the extra .5 mm?

The new valve is bog standard length!!

It's too short.

PM me for the data sheet.  I need your email.

Well when I said the same I was generalising a bit as I haven't checked either gap exactly yet but it's definitely far too big regardless.

Isnt modifying such fun!
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

The best I've never had!
I wouldn't mind if I'd gone big time custom like yourself but they're all supposed to be "standard fit" uprated parts.
I've been pondering whether the valves need lapping further into the head as they seem quite proud but when I tried with the old valve it was pretty much the same and side by side the seating rings aren't that different to cause the extra gap.
Of course it'll probably turn out to be something I've done wrong or not doing right, at which point I'll just laugh hysterically and turn on the gas.
And sit in the corner with a pointy hat on at Ding Day, parked by the bins in a blacked out 320D.

Ok, I know I'm among friends here, or at least people who know I'm basically an idiot.
Remember I clearly said I was just laying the camshafts in the journals for now to measure the lash but they looked nice and flush?
Well they weren't, far from it, so regardless of how many people tell you it's ok to check lash gaps like that or how many YouTube videos you watch it's not. You just end up having to send out a series of very apologetic emails and messages to people who's time could've been spent much more productively.
I've just taken another valve out for that pair to let that lobe sit in the void and they're tight as a very tight thing! Possibly even too tight in places but that's a job for Saturday working them all out.
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

I swear though Patrick, I challenge anyone to do the same thing and not think they were sat flush.
Finally got confirmation the throttle body will be sent out this weekend/Monday too so just waiting on the cat pipe and some ARP head bolts and the fun really begins.
I still need to check all the gaps and probably swap some buckets around but at least that's fairly straightforward, Crower ask for tighter lash gaps than MrT and I measured one around 0.15-0.18 which is about right by Crower so fingers crossed.
Still don't see me doing the Cotswolds meet on the 3rd but probably won't be SORNing at the end of the month now as I imagined this morning.
It'll need an alignment and then off to the tuners to set up the Apexi and see what it's making before sliding gracefully into a hedge bottom somewhere [emoji23]

I know this doesn't help but I assumed you had the cam bolted in when you were measuring up. So if it wasn't flush, it wouldn't really have tightened up. Never considered that, for that reason

Nah, I think the bit where I said I didn't have them clamped in got lost and forgotten early on.
Ironically if I had clamped them in from the start none of this would've happened.
So don't... cut... corners...
By the way I sat outside on Sunday and wrapped the Zero, I repeat my previous statement, good luck doing it in situ..[emoji23]

Haha! I'm starting to think I got lucky last time I did mine in situ!

On a side note;. Do you use the Toyota guides to any engine work? Anything I've done is always based on those, supplemented by tips/shortcuts from elsewhere.
Just because the manual says to check lash before removing cams :)

Oh I'm referencing them all the time but that's only really applicable if you're putting the same lot back in whereas I'm essentially starting from scratch, or at least I expected to be so didn't bother spending the time on it.
I've lapped the new valves in and with the wear on the old cams and buckets I wasn't expecting them to match the old positions.

There's also far too many YouTube mechanics making instructional videos that really shouldn't be followed.
