Gutting a pre-cat??

I've just got my MR2 two days ago and love it. After owning a mark1 then a scooby, it's good to go back to a proper drivers car (scooby good for power and grip but no 'spirit')

I'm a bit concerned about the issue with engines failing and would like a 'lay mans' explanation of gutting a precat  (whatever that is).
