My car has recently returned to the road after gearbox replacement. Engine out, IACV valve cleaned, thermostat & waterpump replaced.
It will not rev past 5500. Abrupt cut in power in 4th, 3rd or 2nd, at exactly the same revs.

Any suggestions?

Carolyn

Sounds like an earth on a sensor.  Crank sensor perhaps... Check all the earths that should be bolted to the cylinder head.  Almost certainly something that has been disturbed in the engine in/out process.

There are earths for the injectors and the coil packs.

Finding it will be a bit of a bugger... step by step.

Having said that... ??

No guarantees!!  Start with the crank sensor, it earths to a small bolt on the timing cover.. Fairly easy to get to from underneath.  If it's an earth, it will be in place, just not fully conductive.  Disconnect, clean, reconnect...

Welcome to the madhouse!!

I would also check the knock sensor. There was an owner that had similar issue and it turned out that replacing the knock sensor solved the problem.

First time I ever tried to rev out my PFL, it hit the wall at 5.5k just as you describe, it was though also accompanied by some general poor running especially at low revs and two error codes. A new MAF completely sorted it, so might be worth investigation.

Quote from: K T M Rider on May  6, 2010, 21:25I noticed right away that the car was a bit spluttery and hesitant at low speed (felt like it might cut out at junctions unless you kept the revs up) and later discovered that it simply refused to rev above 5500rpm with the engine under load (i.e. in gear). it also just felt underpowered and had generally poor / jerky throttle response.........the U380 came back with the p0171 & p0174 error codes...........

Thanks for the replies. The car runs cleanly, the first time I revved it to 5500 I was taken aback.  I'll report back on progress.  I presume OBD is of no help with this....?

Carolyn

OBD might well give some clues - worth checking.  Better still get an app like torque pro and a dongle and you can get a lot of info.

Mafs, unfortunately don't generate codes.  If you do find stuff like misfires and poor fuel ratios, post them on here and you'll get help.

Sorted!   Torque Pro told me nothing, although it's only the 2nd time I've used it....

I inspected the head earths & tested,- no change, then got underneath to get to the "easy to get to"  (John McEnroe would disagree...lol) crank sensor. When I got a tool on it the bolt was loose by a couple of turns at least.
I can't think why it would have been touched during the job...?

Thanks Carolyn.

So it's now running sweet?

I haven't been out on the road....it's wet, but after warming it up on the two occasions it cut out the 1st time, & not the 2nd....so pretty confident.   :)

Please post a report when you've got it well driven and up to temp?
