Managed to source a JDM engine from a Celica GTS auto with 180km (111k miles) on it but was wondering if they are the same spec as the UKDM? Ive requested the ECU as well. Will this drop straight in my MR2?

Guy is telling me a can come down and test drive the engine still in the car for as long as I want and if i'm happy they will pull it there and then for me. He's also stating that the auto's don't get abused as much on the road and track as the manuals seeing there much harder to keep on the boil?

He want £850...thoughts?

My thoughts are he is selling and will say anything to get a good sale.

Although I would agree an auto is less likely to be abused.

100% agreed they'll say anything, he's also stated its a 1 owner car who was an older gentleman, lol.

Cant find any info on a JDM GTS auto. They are all US based and only 180hp for some reason, probably emission regs.

HPIcheck would verify that, no? Well, the amount of owners, not their relative age! Can't see many people tracking an auto.

The only thing with an auto is that when you want to overtake and kick down, it will go to a low a gear as possible so probably more "abuse" than you would do to a manual where you may only drop a gear.

The gt86 auto makes less power than the manual so could it be something like the torque converter?

Seems the JDM is named SS-II but not sure of its power output. Surly all 2ZZ-GE's are all built equal and it's the exhaust and/or ECU that reduces output.

I would think an auto is a safer bet as over revs are what causes a lot of issues to the oil pump etc.

Most auto also have temperature sensors which stops kickdown into a too lower gear if the cars not warm for protection.

Do you know why the power output is only 180hp on the auto? Also if the auto box mates exactly the same as the manual I.e no fabrication to the engine?

Ozzy

I believe all 2ZZ engines themselves are the same and have 190hp. It's the other parts, such as ECU, intake and exhaust that make a differences to the 200hp MSport or the 180hp US GTS's, which are downtuned to meet Americas emission laws.

Sellers probably confused with the names as SS-II is used only in Japan and GTS only in America.

Seller wants an extra £150 for the JDM 2ZZ ECU stating they have a better map than the UKDM ECU, any truth in this? I would have thought the ECU from this auto model wouldn't be compatible with a manual car? I've also read the OBD II function isn't available with the JDM ECU?

I can't speak for a JDM Auto ecu, but i do know JDM ecu's have differences and the map for mine (JDM 1ZZ) is a little more 'punchy'
You can get simple JOBD readers and also add a line of code to Torque Pro to make it talk to JDM.

I believe the jap ECU will give you lift at 6000rpm (rather than 6200), however as it's an auto ECU you will have always have the engine light on (unfortunately).

I agree with the above though, you would assume the auto will have had a more sedate life.

Oh and for JOBD ECUs, there are plenty of OBD2 scanner apps that will read it without changing code etc.

I can live with an engine light, its just whether it'll run a MT properly. Even a 200rpm drop in lift activation would help massively on track as you wouldn't need to be changing at 8200rpm to get back in lift for thr next gear.

Does it need to pass mot?
It won't with a CEL.

I'm sure there are manual japanese 2zz ecus out there if you ask around. Perhaps ask on the 2zz mr2 facebook page.

It does yeah, don't think I'll go with the JDM auto ECU anyway. I'll hold out for a manual version. There's one on eBay now for £70.
