Thanks Carolyn that's really helpful. So is A wrapped Manifold as good as a heat shield? In other words should I replace it if I can?

Thinking about it I don't think that one has a heat shield bracket anyway so wrapping is the only option.

I reckon a good wrapping job is at least as good.  Get the heavy duty wrap (it's thicker).  10 metres is sufficient.
Also - get some Plusgas (if you haven't already!  Spray all nuts and bolts well in advance.  The nuts between the manifold and cat can be a bit of a bugger. Plenty of spray and work them back and forth and they usually comply in the end.

Another also:)  It's worth buying oem crush-ring gaskets for the manifold the cat connection.  After market ones can be a real let-down.  Paul, at our affiliate, TCB can assist, I'm sure.

Wasn't there a discussion on another thread last year not to do it if you only have the manifold changes, but have stock midpipe and stock muffler?

The old OEM ones can be used as well, right? On my previous car I reused old ones and had no issue.

Yes lots of people have bad things to say about wrapping.  I disagree.

I think you got lucky with the crush rings.  I suppose it depends on how old they are.

Kevin at Zero Exhausts explained it was down to the metal used.

My stock wrapped mani cracked like an egg. I wrapped it.
I fully intend to wrap my Zero manifold in the summer when I can be arsed to pull it off.

As for the cheap ebay. Wrap them. They might crack after years and years. Then just buy another one. They're cheap as chips anyway.

Mine from Tpyosports is in the storeroom awaiting better weather...together with brake discs and pads ( front and rear )...

My new manifold doesn't have any cut outs for crush gaskets . Is this right?

That's how they come.  I've got a flat flange pipe on mine working with crush rings.
Re-use the existing head gasket. A bit of a clean won't do any harm. If you want a new one I have one that I haven't used.

Smithy

Oh thanks for the reassurance I thought I had it wrong. I will try to use my gasket but will take you up on the offer if it's not any good. Thanks again

Just to clarify...I wouldn't use the cat flange gasket.

Good afternoon all.
I'm going to wrap my Toyosport manifold this week sometime. I got the wrap that Carolyn recommended. I want to do a good job that will last and I've heard that if a gap is present then a crack could form, is that true? Many thanks.

I reckon there's a lot more stories about cracks than there are cracks.  50% overlap is the way to go. You have enough with 10 metres not to have any gaps.

Secure with plastic tie-wraps at first, then use the stainless ones once you're happy.
I like to wet it first, it helps it to conform to the shape.  Long sleeves and gloves are highly advised.

It's a very satisfying little job.

Thank you Carolyn. so if an area wasn't wrapped sufficiently obviously heat would build up in that area, would that product a possible danger area for a potential crack?

Adding to that Carolyn, how do you stop gaps if you have the heatshield brackets on the manifold, or should you remove them if you're wrapping?

If it has the brackets it's not a genuine Toyosport.  Never mind....  check inside to make sure the pipe joints are flush - not sticking out into the flow.

Some are Ok some not so....

I'd chop the the heat-shield brackets off - but keep the brackets for mounting to the block.  Some people just keep the brackets and use the original heat-shield.

Up to you :)

I'll get a photo of mine. Says Toyosport on in, but has heatshield brackets and no, the flange is not flush either! Not sure what gasket is needed there. I was going to try the normal crush circular ones.

Pipes sticking out on the bottom flange are ok - helps locate crush rings.  I meant the internal joints.  Have a peek up the inside!
