Gearbox - 5sp vs 6sp for a turbo

Hmm, looking around for suitable cars, I'm considering a 2003 car with the 6 speed gearbox.

I'm just thinking though - considering they've squeezed the extra ratio in there, is the 6 speed gearbox any weaker than a 5 speed, or more vulnerable to failures due to the extra torque?

I haven't heard any nasty stories.  And it's basically the same as the box they use for the 190bhp celica so it should be fine.

The only bad things I have heard is the increased possibilities of a mis-shift due to the closer gate (and driver error) - ie. 5th to 2nd instead of 5th to 4th and subsequently bending a lot of valves   s:? :? s:?

The 6th gear is an add on to the 5 "original" ratios, so acceleration wouldn't be any faster, and  the 5sp will (allegedly) take you to 152mph anyway (cue mph  s:) :) s:)  ), so other than autobahn cruising or track work I don't think it'll make a lot of difference which box you use.

IIRC the 6 speed gearbox on the J-spec roadster has shorter ratios and a different final drive to the UK 6 speed (provides more rapid acceleration over the UK 6 speed), so if you can get one it should be better...

Correct

if i remember rightly and somewhere on here, there is a chart (but i cant find it  s:( :( s:(  ) the uk 6-speed gearbox was basically the same as the 5-speed with an extra ratio added on top, presumably for economy

Ekona is going to fit the Hass to his standard 03 model 6 speed. I'm sure he will let us know how it goes   s:crazyeyes:  s:crazyeyes:

As does the J-spec 5 speed.  I think it's only the final drive that's different in each case.

US / J-spec ratios were the same I believe, but the US didn't get a LSD.

Did someone say track work?    s:wink:  s:wink:

That's definitely on the cards once this is all finished ..

But it is good to hear that there aren't any known issues with the 6 speed box - doing some nosing around on Spyderchat I found this:

US have a totally different set of ratios to both UK, EU and J-spec

Ta for that link - that makes interesting reading, as do some of the links onwards from there.

One other thought - are components such as the clutch and pressure plate common between the 5 and 6 speed gearboxes?

I would expect so, the clutch and fklywheel sitting in my garage are for 1zz celica and mr2

in teh celica it's 6 speed only.
