No new MR2 anytime soon!

12 months ago Toyota were thinking of returning the MR2 within their range for the future. Sadly tonight I've read that the MR2 is certainly not their priority and they are concentrating on the "new" GT86 due in 2021.  One day our little cars may return but for now I'd better keep looking after Foxy.

Legislation changes aside.
Mr T would have very little to do.
The design was right then and still is.
Add some lightness. Composite panels?
Offer a 2 or 3 engine options
Perhaps 2 versions of a 1.4 from either VW or Alfa and a purist homage 1.8 version perhaps the Alfa 1750 as used in the guiletta cloverleaf.
An interior refresh

You know in South Africa they still make the vw gold mk1? I believe they bought the rights to make them and the laws allow that standard of vehicle to still be made...

Would be grand if someone could do the same for the MR2.

Lets hope they improve the GT86 because I personally think they "missed the boat with it" , nothing special about it imo, performance or looks wise, I know they handle quite well but the current model does nothing for me

As for a new MR2, would be interesting to see what concept they would come up with if it was ever on the cards

Taste apart, I think they hit the mark: It is a nice enough looking unremarkeble car that will be under any radar.  Especially in white.

As to a new MR2 I never thought that was goin to happen. The previous limited edition hot Yaris was a confirmation of the marketing route chosen. This year´s rally inspired one is proof of that pudding.
Espect some more of hot versions with rally/racing marketing. That sells WAY more/better/easier with less design/development costs than a new MR2.

Nice marketing.
Emission legislation, crash test ratings and possible class action law suits dictate most of the electronics with the bulk of customers expecting all sorts of creature comfort. A hard core version may be optional but the base one... Just have a look at the 718; that was to be back to 550 basics, even has the 718 racer monniker nicked.

Again, all personal choice, looks wise it just don't do anything for me. My good friend has one, he loves it, it handles really well (ok I didn't push it too much when he let me have a go) but it didn't feel any quicker than my MR2

Would I go looking to buy one, nope.

Quicker it is not.
First it´s heavier, second it´s engine is designed for a wiiiiiide rev band so you can light up the tires. So the torque to trigger the butt dyno is not there. The engine is méant be flogged on the rev limiter.
Lastly it is not méant to corner at max fast; it was concieved to go sideways; OEM it even comes on suboptimal grip rubber!!
It is a totally unique car in todays overly politically correct safety conscious society.
