I'm looking for some help in identifying the oil leak below. I had assumed the main seal had done on my 2ZZ so I pulled the gearbox and had a quick look. I'm yet to pull the clutch and flywheel off but from what I can see its not the main seal.

Any ideas on what may be occurring? input main shaft seal?

I would identify what the fluid is. Transmission fluid has a pungent smell to it.

If it is the transmission fluid it could be the shaft seal. The transmission will have to be partially rebuilt.

I did taste it and I'm not convinced it's gearbox oil, having tasted both. I think I'll need to pull the clutch off for a better look as the pressure plate looks clean and oil free which is strange. I've ordered a new input shaft seal but as you say that requires splitting the gearbox.

It is odd that the oil has coated the inside of the bell housing. I would think if there is a leak on the transmission side it would be slight based on the level. I would think the pressure plate and assembly would be covered in oil even if the oil was weeping slightly.
There is only one thing I can think of and that is sometimes when you install a new main oil seal there is the potential of it leaking if its not an OEM part and  if the surface was slightly gouged during the install and removal. This is why I have been against replacing main seals as preventive maintenance as Toyota main seals last a lifetime compared to other makes.

Cost be a fortune 6 years back, I thought the clutch was on its way out. Turned out its was the seal failure flooding oil into the bellhousing. Still dont know the truth this but was told by the dealer  the box had to be stripped down to replace the seal and he also replaced the bearing - £400 plus even though it was off for the clutch, needed the car done quick as was due to go on a touring holiday in 6 days and it was a Saturday when the clutch slipped.
