So I had my tranny rebuild, did everything myself besides 5th gear coz I wasnt confident using the hammer so I took it into a shop. They had 5th gear installed and then installed the gearbox. Went to pick up the car and until I reached a zone where I can go through the gears didnt notice that 5th gear wont go in.

2 out of 3 times it wont go in and once it will and everything will be fine, it wont pop out or anything. Double clutching doesnt help. Reverse engage just fine.

Any clues what to look for?

check the cables at the gearbox end.  Especially the stainless u clips that hold them steady.

Both cables looks ok and car shifts when not driving. Can it be 5th gear synchro issue or the wheel that is shifting it at the top?

They did the work on the fifth gear, so they should stand behind what they've done. See what they have to say?

To update the thread, I took the car into the shop but prior to that noticed that the shifter would move about 4 cm backwards w/o moving the cables at all. The guy had a look and told me its one of the shafts that has ball joints in both ends, it sits in the back of the shifting mechanism. I got them another one that is 2nd hand but seems okay. Lets see if they are gonna fix it.

To me it seems that the cables are not fitted well and maybe that shaft is not ok.
