Click clicking noise

For the last few days, I thought I had a stone or worse a nail in the rear tyre, the clicking would slow down if I slowed and go faster when I went faster. I happened to go passed the tyre place where I brought my Falkens to check for any stones/nails. He jacked Sapphire up and checked each tyre individually but could only find a couple so I thanked him very much and I reversed away not hearing the sound, half a mile later I heard it again so don't know what it could be. Discs are not hot, wheels ran freely when jacked up.The sound really does sound like a stone in the tread. Any ideas what it could be? :o

Often difficult to pinpoint where the noise is coming from, but if not tyres or brakes, next up the rotational chain is the CV joints.

Chilli Girl

Hmmm, never thought about the CV joints Tony :o

Found culprit, the passenger side backplate completed corroded and hanging off behind the disc! :o  I managed eventually to pull it round without damaging the disc hopefully.  Just had a test drive and no clicking. Also noticed both front coil springs towards the top are heavily corroded too.  :o  Well, she is nearly 21.

That's a good/ inexpensive result, several reports of Members running without them.
Corrosion on the top of my (2002) front springs was an advisory some years ago. Having the time available to do such things I removed, stripped and repainted them.

Mine were gone too. Actually worse than yours.

I ordered 4 new OEM replacement ones for circa £100 delivered from TCB.

What's not fitted, can't fail an MOT.

The ones on my not-even-5 year old Golf were corroded, when I did all four corners I took them off and scrubbed them down/spray painted with Hammerite. Despite the car being garaged, can still see rust coming through again.

I slit a hole in them, rather than having to remove the hub, I think the same routine might be possible on the MR2 if you're fussed about replacing them.

That is a very good price for all four compared with offers elsewhere for just two fronts. I have read on here that one end or the other is more difficult to replace than the other, so let us know how you get on with the fitting.

Chilli Girl

Well, I'm just waiting to hear back from Paul at TCB re backplates. Any other suppliers I should try? I wanting to replace all four as I suspect the others maybe abit past it too.

It's a lot of work, for very little reward, Jane.  Most cars' backplates are in poor shape, I'm afraid, regardless of year.

So would you not bother to replace them then?

Mr2paul

Get rid of them as the don't serve a purpose and you will never notice a difference. Some may not like that idea but that's the advise on other forums and I personally would not be wasting money on new ones, just my take

Question:

Why would Toyota go to the effort and R&D to create four independent parts that serve no purpose?

I rather agree with that viewpoint.
An on line search gives various reasons as to why the shield are a valid addition, mainly referring to "protection" of the disc and nearby components.
However, our cars are now ageing, 15-22 years each with a story to tell of use, care, or otherwise.
I suggest that the covers are an item that provide some degree of protection for the design life of the vehicle, as that is now approaching consideration is necessary as to where maintenance monies are best spent.
Pride in ownership will play a part in this I'm sure.

PS
I further suggest that these covers can be compared to the under trays, nappies, that after some lack of care / abuse, when the supply of cable ties is used up, become a nuisance  to remove once a year or whatever, and are cast aside as superfluous.

Mr2paul

I don't no but nice to have I suppose from new, but on our cars 20yrs old , are they going to be around in another 20?  You won't ever no the difference and at least stones don't get lodged. Ask the same question on other forums and I repeat their answer.  Ford, Nissan, Hyundai    Entirely each persons view obviously tho great if you have deep pockets and I'm sure chilli girl will not have car long anyway going from history. Lots of better things to splash £100 on
Or maybe I'm wrong ? New calipers, cables, service, discs, rad, aircon etc.
Need I go on ?

My car is a keeper, hence I could easily justify the expense.

Absolutely not.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

This is what happens when you ask a bunch of blokes for opinions.

Replacing the backplates will cost at least a couple of hundred in labour and shop services, plus the relatively small cost of the items.

I'd get a quote and take it from there.

Your car, your call. ;D

Surely a drop of Hammerite and they'll look as good as new :-)

Seriously they look very corroded don't they - better off without them seems to be the consensus.

If it was Foxy she'd be getting a new set but as has been said its your car & your decision.

Hi @Mickemo - Foxy's are no where near to be replaced, I checked them at Beaulieu  ;)  :o Sapphire of course has done twice the mileage as little Foxy. Ordered new headlights yet for her?

Think C covered it, in a completely separate post long ago.

The plates in isolation. Not worth doing.
If doing other work that involves the stripping down to reveal them. Yes.

Hi @Chilli Girl Yes Foxy's are fine...Ive emailed TCB on several occasions but no response yet so assume the main guy (Paul) there is away on holiday (?)

Looks quite involved to swap the lights over - how long should it take ?
