Sound insulation/speaker change (again!)

Having searched previous topics for stopping door rattles and improving audio quality etc I've noticed numerous recommendations for installing sound insulation such as Dynomat, which seems quite expensive. Another cheaper suggestion has been lining the inside of the door trims with flashing tape - has anyone tried this and how successful has it been?

Also, there has been a lot of talk about speaker quality and I'm considering replacing my existing '04 speakers with a cheap alternative (less than £50). Would I be wasting my time and if not does anyone have any recommendations?

yep, done it and it works fine, another thing that you may want to do is put a bit of clear sealant on each of the white clips that hold the door panel on at the point where they clip on to the panel, i had a few rattle and this cured it

don't bother, not worth it, you'll only get the same performance as the stock ones, IMHO

Totally agree about the speakers; you need to spend at least £100ish to get any improvement at all. I have Dynomat extreme and found it made a huge improvement  s:wink:  s:wink:

you could go for a combo job, i've got the small squares of dynamat extreme around the speakers and then the flash tape all over the panel and the edges of the metalwork of the door

I've got those small squares all over the doors as the supplier had run out of the sheets on my install  s:? :? s:?

Thanks Guys,

Guess what I'm doing later this week!

To confirm, you've stuck the flashing tape on the back of the door panel and on the internal metal of the door frames (don't want to make a mistake - not terribly practical)? Did you put the plastic cover back on?

Just thought of another question - how many layer would you suggest? And I've had a look in Wickes and their tape comes in a variety of widths, 100mm, 150mm and 225mm if my memory is correct. Any thoughts on the best one to go for?

Thanks in anticipation,

Andy

yep, stick it everywhere, i used 2" wide tape(sorry i work in old school units) but whatever you thinks easiest to work with. Do stick the membrane back on as its there to stop the moisture getting in, but if you do tear it or something then dont worry too much, i've never seen any sign of water in there at all.
when you put the tape on the door panel, take time to get the tape up really close to the edge of it so that when you put it back on the door the tape touches the door first and not the panel but without showing.
basicaly take your time for the best job, good luck,
reminds me i'd better finish my install off soon  s:? :? s:?

Hi,

OK been looking through the forum about speakers and sound deadening.  Not so impressed with the speakers, especially with the roof down.  Is the best option to try the sound deadening?  Is dynamat the better option and if so, what do I do with it.  SOunds like it is just a cast of sticking on the steel door panels.  Is that right?  How much of the stuff and where to put it?  Does anyone have any photos of their door with the tape?  Thanks.

no piccies i'm afraid, just plaster it everywhere, on the doors on the back of the panel, even on the plastic moisture seal, you'll need loads of the stuff so rather than pay mega bucks for dynamat try going to B&Q and buying roofing flash tape, its a lot cheaper and a lot easier to work with

I was having a quick look  around for this last night, I have to confess that I ventured over to the competition; Mx-5oc.
As regards; the roof flash tape mentioned above, those guys swear by it, and reckon there is hardly any difference with the £10 a roll flash tape (Halfrauds) and £80 per door covering Dynamat. I'll be going down that route soon too.
there is a good wealth of info for compact space ICE over there, big membership, as there are a heck of a lot of MX5 drivers about!

No time like easter weekend to take the door apart then.  I'm still not entirely sure what I'm looking for....I guess they will know in Halfords / B&Q if I ask for flash tape?

I saw it in Wickes the other day.  Go to the roofing / insulation etc section.

yeah i'll swear by it as well, in B&Q the roofing flash tape has an aluminium back to it but it works the same
