With a heavy heart and a large dose of realism, it's time to offer up my MR2 for sale. The car has an MOT until 21 May 2025 and is located near Exeter. I've owned the car since over 3 years now and have spent more than I care to admit to my other half on it, but what it needs now is someone with more time to sort out the MOT advisories. My ownership has been lightly documented in the thread Project Stop Gap together with the latest MOT results which I will list again below. Usage has been restrained both in terms of mileage and driving style - the primary passenger has been my now 4 year old with trips to the zoo, swimming, etc. 'Modifications' (I'm not really a fan so just practical/hidden things) - after marker DAB CD player (original included, CD not working), speakers & sub, window disabling switch now does the aerial (swapped with coin holder), USB socket in the blank space. The wheels are not the  original colour (not done by me) but do look smart so I left as is.

Good bits:

  • A folder full of history going back to the original invoice for £18565.92!
  • 3 full services in my ownership
  • Lots of big jobs done in my ownership/the last three years; new clutch, alternator, brakes all round and handbrake cables
  • Hardtop & working aircon - re-gassed last year
  • A lovely drive - a funeral sadly stopped my trip to Le Mans (should be there now) but I've happily driven to Cambridge and back and would not hesitate to jump in and drive that distance again. Updated speakers and a sub will make it better again.
  • Soft-top in pretty good waterproof condition with just a couple of nicks as pictured.

Details of work done in my ownership:
  • New Yuasa battery April 2021
  • Full service & clutch replacement Oct 2021
  • New alternator June 2022
  • June 2023
    • Full service
    • New front and rear brake discs and pads (and fluid)
    • New handbrake cables
  • Full service May 2024 (invoice dated June but done with MOT the week before)

Not so good bits:
  • Annoying gearbox oil leak - appears to be the nearside driveshaft seal. New gearbox oil included in the sale. Very little actually coming out.
  • Front tyres - getting old, was planning to replace this year with matching set to the rears
  • Paintwork - front is stone chipped, looks like it's had a scrape at the rear of the passenger door (previously  touched up), a couple of other small bits. I bought the car blind and the pictures certainly didn't highlight these, hopefully the pictures below give an honest impression.
  • Rust starting to appear. It passed the MOT so non-structural at the moment but it's not something to just ignore.

MOT advisories, full history viewable on https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk:
  • Offside Seat belt webbing slightly damaged or frayed (7.1.2 (b) (ii))
  • Front Coil spring corroded both (5.3.1 (b) (i))
  • Offside Rear Coil spring corroded (5.3.1 (b) (i))
  • Front Tyre slightly damaged/cracking or perishing both (5.2.3 (d) (ii))
  • Front Suspension arm corroded but not seriously weakened both front arms + some subframe attachments (5.3.3 (b) (i))
  • Rear Suspension arm corroded but not seriously weakened most rear arms corroded (5.3.3 (b) (i))
  • Rear Suspension component mounting prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive both inner sills + frame rails starting to corrode (5.3.6 (a) (i))
  • Oil leak, but not excessive (8.4.1 (a) (i))

I'm asking £1700 for her, hardtop stand & cover included (the stand arrived under the car when transported, not sure how to move otherwise. Viewings evenings and weekend, PM for a details once you've registered interest on the forum.

Alternatively I'm asking £1000 for the car without the hardtop, fitting kit and associated bits.

Lots of pictures included below, original quality so you can click and zoom as needed. Cheers.

After some thought, a nice drive, and a failed attempt to set aside enough time to do the clean-up jobs on the car myself, I've accepted (with some advice) that's it's probably wise to split the car and hardtop. I'll list the hardtop on here first tonight before popping them both on eBay during the week.

If you do want the whole lot shout now or forever hold your peace :)

I'll send you a PM now.

Turns out my other half has always fancied one in blue but with softtop only - so if you end up selling the hard top we could be interested in the car without!

Thanks. I'll get this post updated to make the car available separately from the hardtop - it doesn't matter which order they go if they aren't going together :) My plans to get a post on eBay were put on hold by realising I didn't have any wide angle pictures of the car so currently still just listed here. Re the couple of questions - I'll pop them here for transparency:

- what is the mileage?
Just below 99,600 - I don't think I'll get there with the very moderate ongoing use.
- what is the oil burn / top up rate like?
I've checked the oil level on occasion and it's never appeared to drop below full.
- anything in the history on that front (rebuilds/engine replaced/etc.)?
I'll pop up service history in my ownership in the first post. I've found a bill for £1900 from 2014 for the head gasket replacement, crack test and skim, new knock sensor - car at 69555 miles then. Other than that just lots of standard history (services, tyres, suspension, brakes, sensors, etc).

Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm definitely up for the car without the hardtop - I'll PM you to sort arrangements to view and collect.

Other half definitely has always wanted one in blue, so might make it a surprise!

Jimbo

Cheers, reply sent with address and phone number for viewing. Hopefully see you Friday!

Now sold, sad it's gone but glad it's going to get some pampering and good use.
