Oil consumption and the great leaking odyssey

Hi,

So basically my Mrs MR2 has had an eternal oil leak (that doesn't  actually drip onto the undertray) and I've only recently been bothered to find out what it could be..

I learned that the culprit is likely the cam chain tensioner body so I've ordered an uprated "O" ring and will get at it....

On another note...it does consume oil...and on previous inspection I noted that cylinder 4 was slightly higher in compression than the others (although they were a tad high too) ...so I checked the front most cam casing and found a non-return valve....
Modern Kias are famed for this issue and I found the NRV to be free flowing both ways so a squirt of brake cleaner and some vigorous shaking found it closing one way again as intended....

Has anyone else had issues with oil consumption on the 1.8 ?..Mrs car has done 125k and is 2002

Cheers for reading

Martyn

You'll find loads of history on oil consumption on here.

There is a 'How To' on dealing with your chain tensioner.

The OEM O ring for the tensioner is pretty much useless and they will usually start to weep after a few months.  If you PM me your address I'll send you one that does work, courtesy of the club.  That's FOC, but you can make a small donation to the club if you wish.  Mind you I see you've ordered an 'uprated one'(21'82mm x 3.5mm Viton ??) and I do know that my innovation has now become common knowledge, though I didn't know they were now actually being sold.

The PCV valve on the cam cover does get tired over time and needs replacing.  It is a little more than just a 'non return valve' and the spring tension is critical for it to function properly. Even if it appears to work off the car, it can be past its sell-by date. Toyota recommend replacement every 30,000 miles. Search for it by engine type (1ZZ FE) as opposed to car model.  Look for Toyota 1ZZ PCV valve.

Oil consumption issues are relatively common.  It's usually down to gummed up oil control rings. Higher than expected compression values (above 185 psi) are an indication of the issue. Unless its excessive, its probably best just to live with it as no amount of potions or additives will cure the issue and it's pistons out to get to the problem.

I am interested to know if your car is a genuine MR-S???

Carolyn thank you so much for taking time to reply...very useful.

I'm unsure if the "O" ring is one that is to your making though the eBay sale.said it was simply "uprated"....il happily get the verniers out if your curious...hey-ho

I did wonder if the rings were gummed up as there's no indication of stem seals being a problem...

I have had a quick glance at the "how to" section..most noticeable for the IAC valve as my Mrs car idles very high for ages...I'd like to learn of it's parameters so will look into it's movement  assuming it's on a stepper motor 🤔

I'm not sure where the claim of the car being an MR2 -S ...it's just a bog standard 1ZZ though if I can claim rhumour  of having something better then il revel in the mystery 😂

Thanks again for the ideas

When Rogue checked my car, it was showing ~200psi but they said the cylinders looked "clean" when they stuck a camera down. I also haven't noticed any oil consumption over last few hundred miles, so should I be worried about the compression numbers?

I wouldn't worry - there's no guarantee the measurement was accurate.

Likely carbon build-up on the piston crowns mines a little high too...runs fine tho...I'm more comfortable with it being high than if it was low
