Hi all, bit of a different one. I'm in need a of a tow car for track days plus dog duties. I want it to be "interesting". Basically all I can think of is a BMW 330i Touring which I gather would be expensive on fuel when towing the MR2. However, it would be reasonably fun, I LOVE the N52 engine. Budget would be ideally up to 6k but could go higher for the right car.

Anything else I should be considering? I don't want to hate it basically!

I'm currently in the next Gen 3 series Touring (F31) with the B48 engine & ZF8 box.

The 320i is buttery smooth with the auto box. The 330i is the same car with a higher tune.

"A friend"  ::) who has the same car has had his mapped, also enjoys the better performance & gets 33mpg on 90% town driving. He tells me.

If you're doing enough ex-urban miles, the 330d with the straight 6 N57 gets rave reviews.

Interesting, didn't think these would be in budget...

When I say 330i I actually meant the older generation with a 6 cylinder engine - I have a soft spot for the N52 engine having had a couple of 130i in the past.

I think more than anything I would like something interesting.

I can't help but think the 3 series might be a bit light for towing a tonne of car with 3 / 400kg's of trailer although I could be proved wrong!

The 5 series gets good reviews as does the A6 Audi but not as fun - about the best of reviews a few years ago was the Mondeo but not everyones taste

Rover 75 estate?
I find them aesthetically pleasing and becoming rare. BMW engines?

Yeah the 3 series is close. It can do 1600-1700kg I believe. Having said that, it turns out they are extremely thin on the ground. 5 series presents more to choose from and slightly more in terms of towing capacity.

@Ardent I'll take a look thanks!

Since I posted this an opportunity has presented itself to get into a pickup truck but not 100% on this just yet... obviously a very different proposition and 3000+kg of towing capacity!

Thanks, yeah these are increasingly coming to the top of the list. Would you say 335d worth it over the 330?

Pickup is now out of the question..

Neither. I was referring to the 5 series.

I did rather want the 5 series over the 3, but the turn into Mrs Spaulding's driveway put me off. Otherwise, yuppers on the F11.
