what is a charcoal canister

Hi all, I came across a thread on here the other day from 2017 about the removal of the "charcoal canister" I'm guessing its down to weight saving or maybe the MR-S did not have it so why do we need it etc.
But when I google info about the canister the info online states its behind the drivers seat close to the fuel tank?
If that's correct what the black tub like thing to the right of the engine and do people remove them for any given  reason.

Charcoal filters out petrol vapour. There is a breather line coming from the top of the fuel filter/pump assembly

cheers for the replay, I do get an idea of what it does as in its a filter for fuel vapour so they go back into the engine and not into the atmosphere but just wondering if the black tank like thing next to the engine is the canister or if its somewhere else.

I think you've picked a result that relates to the American cars there, the "charcoal canister" on the American version is nearer the fuel tank.

Ahh I see, would give more room in the engine bay if it was out of sight
