What have people upgraded their speakers to which they are really happy with? In 2016 I upgraded my speakers to Pioneer TS-G173Ci 280w system, of which the tweeters broke almost instantly so I'd switched back to the OEM with the 17cm speakers, which I've been satisfied with up to recently. Noticing now when I turn the music up load it becomes muffled. I have a Pioneer head unit already installed too.

Essentially I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive speaker upgrade.

Anyone tried Bose speakers like these for example? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/405732403836?_skw=bose+6.5inch+car+speakers&itmmeta=01K09X7M7T6KMCX098M95WKS7W&hash=item5e77892a7c:g:-AQAAeSwvehn8tJH&itmprp=enc%3AAQAKAAABAFkggFvd1GGDu0w3yXCmi1cAlPwBB5h8pkemnb4Lmdkj%2FKnCIdNqgkCoiqls0sfqU238GrDxq0mpPDStcse74wOlN6PODEnMLe2QDpnSs4D5VqnhmuLR3k0sUhmtnYi4iQz9BIZL26i4aDauo%2B7TtQzKQztdDheSQWGhyzNif%2FxhjkfHTGZm7PRaqxjgwXIPH2a8V1yq5PlSLPesgL8I9CLRcVbDDvhPhyO4PB9J0bLRDz8KWSlPFPywVEY94A%2BmncIEexoCuD2rhfa6XZCmjU05AjPVrd7hlgsqdTIrBD%2Bg0PhYzBVHw7daeDYQkxPczL41W2OBKMMtZjxrsj7CiB0%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR57Enr2CZg are they compatible? Can you use speakers that are the same size from other cars?

regardless of your brand of choice I would maintain the separate tweeter setup.. don't go for combined as it's just not as good in my experience.

As long as your speaker diameter matches and the impedance is ok you're good really..

I am installing my audio kit into my latest two tomorrow. I'm using the same as I did in the last car but with a pioneer head unit instead. You can see the speakers, amp, sub and speaker wire in the pic here.

I have fitted this setup to 4-5 small cars now and it works great. The soundproofing is stinger in the brown box at the back

I'll post some pics of it installed

The Bose speakers you liked are crap as I suspect were the pioneers. The hertz speakers shown here are about £115 and embarrass stuff much more expensive.  If you're fitting aftermarket speakers you need the mountain brackets to do so you can't fit them directly in replacement without a mount of they will sound shite.

With the Hertz speakers would I need an amp to notice the difference? I'm less fussed about having a subwoofer. Sound deadening is also on my list to do when I change the speakers

You wont need an amp they will function just like the factory units but with an amp (and the JBL one shown here is about £100) they sound far better because the built in amp in any head unit is very a great part.

I put focal speakers in mine because they were the go-to speaker recommendation for a long time.

I was underwhelmed by them though until I put in an under dash sub which transformed the sound by sending more of the bass to the sub and letting the speakers work much better with the mids and high frequencies.

Under dash subs are worth considering (no extra amp needed) and no loss of storage space!

could work well too, what focals do you recommend and which under dash sub?

I cant remember the details of the focals but it would be an old model by now so may not even be in production. I think the main reason they were popular was about the fittings which didnt need changing I seem to remember. Any appropriately sized (check the tweeter size particularly) and good spec ones should be a big improvement.

Have a look at page 1 of my readers ride thread below for some pictures of the speaker mounts I made from mdf and the sub details and perhaps a picture of the speakers too I think.

The OEM tweeter mounts are a pain in the arse to be fair. I've just finished fitting the pile of bits above and getting the tweeters seated properly is the most annoying part.
