Runs like crap

Hi

My friend bought a -00 MR2 with the OE 1zz engine still running at around 100000 miles. It consumes oil, precats has been removed at some point, and it runs like it has 80bhp instead of 140bhp. Like crap!

Plugs and air filter is new. Engine has been flushed and serviced. MAF has been cleaned, and also exchanged with my MAF temporarily just to see if that was the culprit. It wasn't.

CEL is now lit. I will pull the codes tomorrow and report back. But maybe someone has a good idea on what to check next?

 I suspect the camshaft/VVTI system could be the culprit. I hear a small ticking noise which my car has not.

Ticking could just be a wide valve clearance. 

I'll hold off on anything more until you post the code(s).

You can get a long way by disconnecting the ignition coils or injectors whilst it runs to see if there is any change in engine note.

Obviously disconnecting the  battery for some time and clearing codes and starting from there is ideal.
