Time to replace the stereo

As per my other thread about the stock stereo - occasionally broken volume knob and slightly skippy playback - it's time to replace the head unit.

I went all round the houses looking at hard disk mp3 players, etc, but I think I've settled on the Sony MEX-R1. It seems a good mix to me, but the big pulling factor is the DVD MP3 playback, so called GIGA MP3.

Seems a whole lot more flexible than a hard disk based solution.

Now, I read all the DIN/ISO stuff and I think I'm safe on the surround. But what I want to know is where I can find a oddment tray adaptor to fill the rest of the space. I'd rather than than a blanking plate really.

Anyone got any thoughts on that or comments on head unit choice? Only other option I found for a similar price (£180) was JVC KD-DV5101.

I did quite like the idea of adding a screen, but I can always do that later..

Not cheap are they! I could get a second unit, perhaps TV, for only a little more!

They're a bit cheaper here  s:) :) s:)

Thanks Hanslow. Is it a direct replacement? Or is there a bit of messing about?

Nearly a direct replacement. Very little faffing required (about 5-10 mins tops). There is a guide kicking around on here (or at least a link to one) which pretty much details everything you need to do. Do a search for "replace stereo" or do a search for "FP-11-03" and you should pretty much find all the info you need.

You will need to remove the heater surrounds to be able to get to the screws to remove the old one and put the new one in. Should only take around an hour tops  s:) :) s:)

Thanks again.. Having done a bit more searching it seems like that part is for a facelift. Does it fit the 2001 model just as nicely? Or am I better off just getting the single DIN cubby hole?

I think it should fit yours OK but probably best to trawl the site a bit and possibly spyderchat to make sure it does!

Mine (on a facelifted '04) looks like this:

That audioleads faceplate adapter looks good.  A *lot* neater than my Toyota bits around the same H/U.  Wish I had done that now  s:-( :-( s:-(

Is that the standard external trim ring on there?  Does it fit well, cos mine is loose (close inspection will reveal strategically placed Blu-Tack  s:oops:  s:oops: )

F Everybody's I, you don't need a wiring loom for the pre facelift if you're buying another Sony. And the Halfords single DIN tray fits perfectly, so that's all you'll need.
