Coolant Hose Size

Hello all.

Me again with another obscurity. I noticed the fans on today, checked the true temp. with an ODB reader, and it was sitting at 103°C - great...

Checked the coolant and it's low, then saw the leak.

In a nutshell I need to replace this hose:

It is leaking underneath (this photo is sideways, with the right hand side being downwards):

My question is, does anyone know the diameter of that hose please? I struggled for a good half hour trying to locate it specifically on japanparts diagrams.

I'm guessing I can just buy coolant hose and cut to length, then swap out, but I can't remove the hose to check without rendering the car potentially undrivable til I replace.

I wouldn't drive it like that.. It could get worse very quickly and the results would be bad.  All-ally engines do not like to be overheated.  The cylinder head is right at the high point of the system and will be the first to seriously overheat.

@Whisperhead
As Carolyn wrote!
I suggest your car is "undrivable" now with that leaking hose.

100% much like mine is as I put in another thread although I can't see yet which hose it is

It's unfortunately a case of no choice at the moment - it's my daily car. I'm carrying a bottle of coolant in the car to top it up after each journey, and the distance I have to travel each day isn't too far so with a little luck it'll be ok.

Ordinarily I'd contact J-Spec for a replacement but I'm hesitant to fit a used hose, it seems worth replacing with a new one. Given the cars age, the originals seem to be discontinued everywhere I've looked.

Edit: Looks to be 16mm (5/8") - I;m contacting some local motor factors today, so will update if it fits.

I'm fraid this sort of problem is going to occur more often.. These special little hoses are getting past their sell-by date.

Yeah I was just thinking this Carolyn, the car is over a quarter century old now so I guess this was all coming down the track sooner or later - at some point soon I'm going to need to find myself a replacement hose set and sort the whole system in one hit.

Good luck with that! I think we're just going to have to find acceptable substitutes and re-route them somewhat.

Most of the OEM hoses are still available form the Japanese sites like Amayama and Yumbo and at reasonable prices.

The down side of course is delivery isn't going to be within a day or two

Nice find on ebay there! A lot of the hose sets I have come across are marked unsuitable for SMT cars because of the extra hoses etc but I'll work something out.

In any case, my deductive skills once again have failed me - turns out the hose is intact (I gave it a once over), but the clip fitting it to the t-section hadn't been refitted when the engine was replaced back in April...

What's even worse, you can actually see this in my photo up top... How I didn't notice, I don't know.

Shifted it over the joint, leak stopped immediately.

I also found last week that the Camshaft Sensor hadn't been plugged back in either, which was the reason my car would take two or three attempts to start for the last five months following the engine replacement.

Found that by chance with my snake cam.
Thinking I might have to have a dig around the engine bay for other stuff that was missed.

Nevermind. It's highlighted a potential issue for the future to look out for. Thank you all for your help in this too. I'm very grateful.

Pleased at the outcome, but that would be frustrating.

After mine has just dropped all its fluid I've bought the last set they had of these

Figured out none of it will have been changed before and they are all 22 years old

Didn't need them in the end it was a small hole in the radiator. Now debating whether to keep them and do them later or send them back hmm

Carolyn

Keep them  Good spares to have.
