Does anyone know if there is a sat nav system that is available to be fitted in the dash compartment on top of the dash?

there is a sat nav system made by Toyota, but i've never actually seen one in the UK, best bet is to go for something like the Tomtom Go series and put it in a custom mount, or there are units that will plug into Alpine, Kenwood, VDO head units and come up on the screens that are attached to them

I have the Toyota fitted one - It basically is built into the standard stereo (YES the fisher price one!) Black and white screen - works well but no where as good as the off the shelf 3-D colour screens you can get nowadays. But as a purely functional system I love it - its accurate and fast.

Everyone who's bought an '03 or later already has it, or at least half of it anyway. The rest of the system consists of the TNS300 DVD drive, a GPS antenna, and the data CD. The wiring is already installed.

No so fast there Chris, I've driven both the Toyota TNS System and my Blaupunkt TravelPilot back to back, and the Toyota one is, well, its a bit crap... Add to that that it means you have to keep the same hopeless Fisher Price CD player, and it costs about double the cost of my Blaupunkt with its in dash cd changer, and I think you see its not quite the fantastic bonus you thought it was.

I have the Garmin Street Pilot 2005 software plus GPS antenna (all for only $100... such a deal) and a tablet PC running XP. This has an 800 by 600 color daylight readable touchscreen, wireless ethernet, USB, PC card slot, and other neat features. Unsecured wireless networks are easy to find... it asks me if I want to connect when it finds one. I've logged onto spyderchat while eating breakfast at Burger King. There is just so much you can do with a rugged little tablet. Mine has the complete BGB and wiring diagrams on it in PDF.

HP TR3000

I got mine for $1200 as they have been discontinued by HP. It had a problem on day 2 but HP warranty covered it. They replaced the mainboard. I'm going to get an extended warranty so I don't have to worry about it. They were originally around $3,000 (hence the name). They are rated for 22Gs and 25 drops from 6 ft onto plywood covered concrete... truly rugged with a magnesium case.

Even though the temperature range it will operate at is decent, I'm going to mount it in front of the main fans (Florida, don't you know). Actually, I'm hoping to get Corky to make a mounting bracket for me so I can install/remove quickly, yet hold it firmly in place. I plan to return to autocross after the 2ZZ swap and want it secure.

Here's a similar product, but upgraded in several ways (processor I noticed right away... mine's a 933MHz Pentium III). Also, this Itronix model has built-in GPS. Too pricey for me.
