I've seen a new Ipod interface which works with all toyota model stock HU's (03 onwards fisher price jobs) but the product is US only.  Anyone know if the US cars have the same loom going to it with the same connector as UK models?

The bit of kit has arrived and low and behold the connectors are totally different.  After fumbling with the rear of my radio it doesnt match anything at all   s:roll:  s:roll:   The US spec radio has the CD connector shown second from left here -

Its the one with 2 rows of 6 pins.  I've posted on spyderchat to see if someone has the CD changer wiring diagram and I also need one for the UK car.  It seems ISO adaptors would be useless since they only do the main 2 plugs (power and speakers etc) and nothing is available for the CD changer so I'll need to splice the wires into cars harness I think (not looking forward to that - any electrictians here   s:lol:  s:lol:  ).  But before I can give that a go, I need the wiring diagrams - any ideas where I can get them - would Toyota GB have the diagrams for both UK and US???

I do have a question  - I pulled out what I think is the cd connector on the post 03 cars (the top most connector i.e. the one above the 3 others connectors) and the radio didnt work properly with it disconnected.  If that is only for the CD changer (which I dont have) how come it affects the radio????????

I think the two HUs are designed to use different mfr/model CD changers, so you *may* not even have luck rewiring it.  Reason being: there is probably some communications protocol between the CD changer and HU.  Those converters are supposed to fool the HU into thinking there is a CD changer present with a CD inserted and playing.

When you removed the connector it *may* have fooled the HU into thinking there's a CD playing in the changer, so it switched off the other sources.  This could actually be good news... then you'd just need to ID the pins that have audio input and don't need a special converter.  If all else fails, you can open up the HU and solder (test first  s:) :) s:) ) an audio in from iPod (or whatever you plug into your add-on audio jack(s)) into an appropriate place.

It seems that the same CD changer is used right across the range in the US, it would amaze me if Toyota Europe used a different one (have they not heard of economies of scale   s:lol:  s:lol:  ).  I really need to get hold of the wiring diagrams as if the same functions are carried by each version, it should work being re-wired.  Just a bugger as it seems these wiring diagrams aren't commonly available for the CD changers   s:cry:  s:cry:

I would think they'd make a universal one and have jumpers for different regions, but no.  Europe and US have different specs on frequency spacing and whatnot.  I think Japan uses the same specs as the US, but they probably have yet another Head Unit for other reasons (features perhaps, or a deal with a manufacturer).  Head Units are probably not even the same manufacturer between US and Europe.  Even in the US, pre-03 had a different manufacturer.

On my MK1 MR2, I wired an aux input into where the tape player input went to the main board so I didn't have to use one of those cassette adapters.  As I recall, I had to lower the input level quite a bit because the cassette tape input was low level.  It can be done without a schematic, as long as you can trace the wires/runs.

Another option is to add a separate amp and connect the iPod to it.  Turn on the amp when you want to listen to the iPod.  You'd just have to connect amp outputs to speakers (two input sources for each speaker).  Play both at the same time if you want.   s:wink:  s:wink:

As there has been a total lack of help on this I'm guessing the CD connector diagrams are not available.  I think I'll put this wire tunes up for sale in America then.  It retails for around 180 dollars so I guess if I put it up for 60 or so it should sell.  It's a bugger really as it seems the exact bit of kit I was looking for (want to control the ipod from radio buttons so I can leave it in the glovebox and that is what this thing does   s:cry:  s:cry:  )

We don't need no steenking diagrams!   s:wink:  s:wink:   Unless you aren't into electronics, that is.  Sorry I couldn't help more.

Nope, mechanical engineer by trade (though no longer by job).  If you want an aircraft designing, talk to me, if you want the avionics doing, you're s**t out of luck with me   s:oops:  s:oops:

I dare say that with a multimeter I'd work it out no probs however without the original US headunit I have nothiing to compare it to and I'm not risking buggering up the headunit or the control box if I get wires swapped around.  Hence, if I had US diagram, I'd be in happy town.
