Difficulty getting it up!

Hello,

This is my first post on the forum as I picked up my new MR2 on Friday. I had the hardtop and took it off on Saturday but have found the soft top to be very difficult to get up - it doest seem to want to 'meet' with the windscreen. Is this normal and something that will get better, as I presume that the soft top wont have been up since it left the factory, or is it something I need to get the dealer to look at for me?

I have searched and seem to have read 100's of posts on the soft top but can't seem to find an answer so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Deacon

The top has a rubber component, so you're inability to get it up can be chalked up to shrikage in cool weather.  Keep trying to get it up that way and it will fall off.

make sure your windows are down when you try to close your soft top.
As you set out for Ithaka

Deacon,

Mine was exactly the same!

Also bought the car with a hard top and found it very difficult; no almost impossible, to get the soft top up. Perceiver with it and it will slacken off in time. Mines no problem at all now, though the hard tops no been on since April.  s:D :D s:D

Hi,

Please don't start messing about with any adjustments.

The tops are meant to be a snug fit....

As said previously, get the windows down, the sun visors folded forward and pull the roof up from the drivers seat with the middle handle NOT FROM OUTSIDE THE CAR!

You should be able to get the clips, when opened just to meet up the the clasps. Then as you fold the clips in the roof will naturally stretch.

A couple of days in the sun (or weather!) will ease it off and over time it will be fine.

I repeat again, DO NOT START MESSING WITH SETTING - what would you rather have a snug fitting roof, or a flappy one !!! I for sure always go for tight !!!

What you will find though, with it being folded down from new, is that you should not get the EARS problem others have had as the roof is very well trained at being down.

Just accept it as a condition of it being new.

Hope the comments help.

Cheers

Might have missed the best time to do this, but if it is really tight, wait for a warm day, pull the hood up as far as it will go without actually fixing it.

Give it an hour or two in the sun, and then fix the clasps. Should go on dead easy. Leave it fixed up for another hour or so, and I reckon from then on, it will be easier.

But remember as Darren said, tight is best

One more thing...when you are raising it, see that everything goes where they should. For example the "upper rear" corner of the side window surround seems to have a habit of going on the outside of the rubber seal when it should go inside and that makes the top very hard to close fully.

(you can force it shut, but might damage the seal)

Just like everything else (except, probably, one thing), the canvas goes really stiff when cold.  Personally, I never had any problems getting it up although putting it down sometimes can be a bit of a pain, especially from the inside.

Oh yeah, and like the others suggested, make sure the windows are down.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Put the top down yesterday and it was a doddle to get back up (like the one I'd test driven had been) but thanks to everyone for putting my mind at rest.
