Hiya all

Just got my first '2 and wondered if anyone can tell me the 'CHEAPEST' way of gettin a slightly nicer, deeper sound out of it.  Im thinkin along the lines of a CAI that works and is easy to install or would i notice any difference at all with just a performance filter?

I know the whole induction issue seems to be ongoing and I appologise if my question is abit tedious but id really apperciate some advice.

Cheers Spen.

Take your exhaust off!   s:wink:  s:wink:

No seriously,

In likely order of price:- Take out pre-cats, Markiii Inlet Duct, Change Panel Filter, CAI, Twin exhaust. Take your pick. Have a search for approx costs.

All work, none improve efficiency all that much

Cheapest would be to remove the stock elbow; improves noise at the expense of performance.

That was quick! Cheers Bongo/Rodger.
Im not that fussed about improved performance right now (funds are low from just buying the car) although will be in the future but obviously would prefer not to loose any.
Ive been reading up on CAI on the owners club site and the rest of tinternet for the past few days and i seem to be goin round in circles. Is there one system that is easy to install and works (bearing in mind the hot air from the engine) for less than £200?

If you have a couple of hundred quid, you could consider one of these...

I can vouch first hand to the quality of Blueflame stuff. I've had their end cans on a few of my previous bikes, and my last car (Puma) had a stainless system from the cat back. The quality and finish was excellent, fitted straight on and sounded deep and growly without being too chavvy...  s:D :D s:D

When the warranty expires on my 2 I will be fitting one without a second thought....just my opinion though!!    s:wink:  s:wink:

well i am thinking of gutting my pre cats and wanted to know if it would be ok to remove the muffler and just run an open pipe comin from the second cat. like weld on a pipe that connects to the cat and right out the back. no muffler, saves me a good 30 pounds. would this be safe?

I had that setup with PPE header and a custom cat from them. I'm sure it's safe to your car, if you meant that, but it won't be safe to your ears  s8) 8) s8)
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

cool, that will do me nicely then as no cash to get a new system or back box.  ill pressume its an ok louder noise rather that a knackered exhaust sound  lol

I can certainly understand the desire for better sound. First time I brought the Spyder around to my friends after I'd bought it, the concensus was unanimous: "You've got to do something about that exhaust.

Here, think about the entire respiratory cycle. Roger gives you a good pricing overview above, to which I'll add that it really makes sense to improve breathing throughout. New exhaust and some intake adjustment. The exhaust takes priority over a CAI, since you can tune intake. But decat first - to improve sound and protect the motor.

Personally i would recomend the Blitz induction kit. I'm not too sure about any increase in performance but the sound leave me with a smile every time i put my right foot down   s:D :D s:D

What he said!

Might as well pour dirt straight to your cylinders or take the filter completely off  s:? :? s:?

Oh yah! I second that!

When I first had the Apexi Intake on... started the car.... DUH! What'a happening? There was just this lower rumble. Hmmm... took the car for a drive up teh highway...

At 3500rpm, things start to show up... can hear teh growl!
At 4000rpm... whooooaaa! The induction growl just picks up as the car speeds up...
At 5000rpm! The induction resonance just flows into your car! BEAUTIFUL!

Oh yes and there's also the nice air sucking sound when u turn the engine off.

Yes. Apexi if u wanna consider an air intake. I am trying to post a sound clip of my apexi on a stock MR-@ but my digital camera is not doing the sound justice with its 8kHz mono sound recording capabilities. Will get one up when I use a videocam.

I'm gonna try removing the precats next to see what the effect it  s:) :) s:)

metal filters can be good though, all the air filters at work are metal mesh, mind you most cost £2k+

I'll add my usual two penneth on the Blitz filters now  s;) ;) s;)

I had one on the 300ZX for a good few thousand miles - when we took the heads & turbos off the engine there was zero bore wear, no marking, no pitting and no wearing of the turbo impellor that would suggest dirt doing any significant (i.e. measurable by eye, rather than with an electron microscope) damage. The engine still had excellent compression and zero oil consumption (well, until two unrelated oil seals let go!)..

Sure, that doesn't really give any evidence on what it might have looked like after 30-40k, but..

I drove one summer without any filter at all with my old Celica and the engine didn't get any noticeable/visible issues during that. I'm not sure about miles, maybe 10k km, some 6k miles.

I think it takes a longer time to make a difference than few thousand miles  s8) 8) s8)
