Rattling Noise From The Hardtop When Cold!!!

I put my hard top on for a few days last month for a change of look, when I put it on it was making a noise like it was rattling back and forwards as it wasm't lined up correctly.  Had enough of the noise so took it back off and the noise was no more.

At the weekend there I put the hardtop back on and the same problem was still there, driving to work in it for the first time this morning and the noise was really annoying me, 10 miles down the motorway and a nice little heat in the car and then I realised I hadn't heard the noise for a while.

It seems that the noise was only there until the inside of the car heated up, could it maybe be that when hot it expanded the metal so no more creaking????

Anyone else had this problem?

it's a pain in the @rse mate, it was doing my head in, at first I thought I had got something trapped like the cable for the heated window so removed it then refitted but still the same noise.

It may seem obvious, but are the 4 clamps tightened properly?

Could be the clamps.  My dealer replaced one as it wasn't tightening properly.

I may have a similar problem.  One of my clamps has recently started to pop out and then the top rattles.

Hope I don't have to get a new one...

your going to laugh here, when i first put it on i forgot about the 2 straps at the side and just did the 2 at the top, maybe i have stretched something with missing the side ones but it is weird how the noise goes away when the car is hot.

sorry took so long getting back to you mate, well i managed to identify that the noise in mine is from the 2 from front hard top clips but apparantly the garage said they couldnt find any rattling so not sure wether its worth trying to tighten these or just learn to live with it

I couldn't find any info anywhere about how to tighten these? I've just put the hard top back on mine and the side clamps didn't feel reassuringly tight!

kris, i took your advice last time and reset all the clips. i got the clips pretty tight but there is still a bigger gap passengr side than drivers. mr t were no help saying if it clips on it should be ok and if i wanted them to look at it they would have to charge me. i slackened the clips again slightly as ive read overtightning them can damage the seals, still sitting slightly higher on the passenger side but sealed all round and ive driven in some horrendous weather with no probs. my advice would be if its doing its job, dont mess with it!

thats what i say, the rattling is a bit annoying but not a drop of wind or rai gets in so i aint fiddling with it

It might be due to heat expansion but I think its more to do with body flex.
Try putting a little grease on all four mounting points of the hard top so that the roof can "float" on a layer of grease, it seems to work with mine OK.
