Tire wear?

I took my car in for its first 10000 mile/12 month service last week and asked Mr T to have a look at the excessive tire wear on the fronts inside edges. He came back saying it was normal.

Well I know our cars are prone to this but is it normal for the edges to be down to 2/3mm at 9000 miles?  s:shock:  s:shock:

The legal requirement is 1.6mm if I remember correctly but is that over the whole tire width?  s:? :? s:?

Any thoughts on my best/cheapest replacement options and cost comparisons, i.e. just replace the front two with standard fit items or should I go for changing the all four with some Toyo's?

Mine do not wear much at all on the fronts so this looks to be a tracking issue me thinks.

1.6mm over 80% of the tyre width if my memory serves me right. Personally I would not go as low as 1.6mm.

Toyos are your best bet and a full set will probably be cheaper than two stock fronts  s:wink:  s:wink:

Further to my earlier post I've just asked Mr T for a quote for the replacement of my two front tires with standard Yokos to match the rear. He came back with £99.50 each   s:shock:  s:shock:

So it looks like a full set of Toyos' for me!

Just to confirm the latest is the type 'T1-R' and a good combination for my '04 car would be 195/50 15 and 225/40 16 (from memory). Please excuses the question but there is so much to read on the subject its impossible to get a definitive answer.  s:? :? s:?

By the way, has anyone told their insurance company of a change in tire width and is it necessary?

I have just had the same problem with my front tyres, the car went in for work on the roof and I asked them to check the tracking as the inside edges of the front tyres were wearing faster than the rest, the inside edges have worn 1 mm more than the rest of the tyre after 7,500 miles .

The result is that the tracking was within tolerances( mr t wanted to charge me for the tracking check but i stamped my feet!!)and the wear is a result of the camber setting on the car.

The yokos on my car are directional but if I swap them from one front alloy to the other front alloy then I can keep the directions right and wear the out side if that makes sense( helpful service man's idea!).
this should let me get 15,000 miles out of the front tyres without being illegal!!
