I have had me '2 for about 2-3 months and I have done about 3k and it has gone through about 4-5 litres of oil. I've just checked the Pre-cats and they look ok. (Not flaky) I know the '2 uses a bit of oil, but should I be worrying and get it checked out??

Definitely. You shouldn't be using that much. Have you actually put it that amount in? Reading the dipstick can be a bit awkward, and we get the usual provisos about level ground etc.

Checking the pre-cats is only an indication of one side of them, there's the engine side as well which you can't see through the 02 sensor holes. This check really only confirms the possibility of a problem.

If you are using oil its an engine problem. The trouble is MrT will usually strip down, but if nothing found the cost to do it is yours even under warranty   s:roll:  s:roll:

IMO if it is the problem that others have had, the only way you can confirm it without an engine strip is to do a very careful check of oil over a few days, making sure your readings are done in the same place at the same engine temperature.

If you can see it dropping, unfortunately you are likely to have the problem. Keep meticulous records to show MrT thus avoiding their usual request to fill it up and ask you to report in 2-3 weeks.

Lets hope its just a reading problem.

The car was serviced a few weeks before I bought the car. The first time I checked my oil was when I had for about 2-3weeks and it was low, then I filled it half way. It has stayed there for about 2months,
I checked it before I went on a long journey last weekend and it was still at the same point, went on this long trip (+150 each way) and when I checked it today it was just above the 'L'.   s:shock:  s:shock:    s:shock:  s:shock:

I have filled it right to the tops with semi-synthetic oil and I will be checking it every day when I come home from work.

The exhaust is a little Smokey, even when warm, but it looks and smells like condensation. There is no oil on the driveway or in the exhaust tip ? ? ?

the car is 2001 with 25K

Quote from: "extremeMR2"4-5 litres of oil

The difference between upper and lower limits of the stick is about 1 liter, definitely not 4-5.

It's not uncommon that the oil capacity decreases during a long drive when things get hot for a while...keep an eye on it though.
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

DOH, Put too Much oil in, is this a major problem?? i could try and take some out through the Sump plug. Is this worth doing or will it be ok??

Over filling can be just as bad as under filling - at worst, it can blow out oil seals or force oil past the rings, and apart from anything else it'll rob you of power if the crank is sloshing about in oil.

I'd be inclined to drain it off - in fact, looking at the colour of that oil, I'd be inclined to do an oil change at the same time.

Aaron is right - and always quicker than me at posting  s:wink:  s:wink: . Overfilling is not a good idea, although the implications can vary between engines depending on the set-up at the crankshaft/sump end.

Our sump's max dipstick mark is set to ensure that the oil level at rest is nicely under the drip tray (or whatever its called) within the sump. Overfill it and you've got a pool of oil in proximity with the crankshaft......not too bad when you're stationary and level, but I wouldn't want it surging about in there, even though there is a reasonable margin of clearance on the 1zz (I can confirm having just had it off ())

I'd be strongly inclined to drain some to ensure its below tray level so that you're not inviting such problems, particularly as you're currently going through a close monitoring of consumption.
