I was on the motorway today when suddenly I heard a loudish knocking sound, above say 60 it got worse.

I slowed drasticaly and dipped the cluch, it still did the noise, phew, not the engine blown.

I slowed almost to a stop and something sounds to be scuffing or rubbing at the slowest speeds its almost like a twanging elastic band.

Oh dear it sounds expensive    s:? :? s:?

Any ideas?

I limped to work as I was very close.

Im gonna get out  there in a minute when the rain dies down.

The wheel I couldnt get the spacer off of, at the weekend, all seems to be intact ie I didnt forget/not tighten any bolts or anything.

I think maybe this car is now suffering from its new outside life   s:cry:  s:cry:

Are you sure that it's just not some rubbish caught up on a tyre/wheel/driveshaft?

I justr drove it a bit.

Starting off its nearly gone.... after a min up the road and back reaching up to about 40 its doing it again.

It get louder and when I parked back in my space it was loud scrapes again.

I checked all the wheels and under trays nothing looks loose or alien.

In an hour when we get a break im going to try to jack up the back end and run it a sec and see then.

I tried the brakes and the hand brake, didnt seem to make a difference to anything, that was this morning on the way in (tring to rule things out).

Jacked up car, distinct play in the wheel.

Loosened and re tightened nuts, will test drive soon to see if this was the problem or not.

could be wheel bearings then as previously suggested
