Engine rough at high RPM - Vvt malfunction?

Hi - have noticed that rather than the expected kick in the pants at high RPM, my Roadster feels like it's running rough/misfiring above 4500-5000rpm.

Shouldn't I be getting a top end rush as the VVT kicks in rather than a loss in power at high RPM?

Maybe it's how the MR2 engine is, but I have a feeling mine isn't running quite right.

Anyone else think theirs does this or is mine needing some attention?

4000rpm is where the fun normally begins, the engine comes on song then.

Have you just got the car, or was it running OK and just started playing up?

my mates mr2 had similar problem wouldnt rev at the top end at all and got no power, turns out to be a precat failure blocking the main cat.

Had it a couple of years, always seemed a bit flat at the top. I thrash it more than I used to which may be the difference, I'm spending more time near the redline. But where it feels like it should take off it feels a bit woolly and flat. Like a misfire almost

VVT kicks in

VTEC kicks in, yo!

VVT doesn't kick in. It's on all the time from idle to redline. It's constantly variable, not on/off.

It's propably a MAF malfuction, happened with mine, once replaced, all was well again.

long explaination is that the car gets the mixture wrong, runs lean and thus at higher revs struggles to deliver the power, you may even trip the engine management light if you keep running it.

As regards Engine failure / pre cat failure, my car ran fine until the cat collopsed, even though it was using loads of oil, which leads me to think that it's just a MAF problem.
