Okay, okay I thought that I would have a bit of fun when I saw a Porsche 911 come screaming past today ..  I managed to catch him up  (he obviously wasnt redlining every gear like my good self) as he was crusing at about 80 ..then we got to some twisties and I kept with him and he could obviously tell I wanted to overtake him so he floored it and I literally ate his dust!  That is one seriously fast car .. you dont appreciate it until you see it in front of you how fast they are!

Just thought I would share that ywith you all   s8) 8) s8)

That's what makes me laugh about all these "I raced a........." stories. If he had decided just to keep you behind him, then you would have come on the foum and said that you managed to keep up with a 911 on the twisties. And there would have been many members going "wow" and telling other people that their car can keep up with a 911 and that someone you know has done it.

The thing is, you never know (unless you know them) what the other person is thinking or their driving style. I'd say most of the time they are not really pushing it, more like pulling you along.

The only real test is to take it on track and say to him "you give it all you've got and I will do the same". Then, and only then, can you really compare.

I think Motorways flatter a lot of peoples ego's in regard to this.  I know I have had a focus 1.6 fly up behind me, him with his built up momentum me just cruising at 80 it takes an age for any car to accelerate from say 80-110 to match the others speed. Ultimately you try and accelerate away but there is that inertia to overcome and more often than not you tend to pull out of their way.  As a result I bet there are a few drivers like that who have thought they have been quicker than another more powerfull car.

Similair thing happened on the M1 the other day coming back from MK, a Golf R32 in front of me absolutely trounced me

Here's a little secret, I have had two 1.6i Focus's, one LX and one Zetec (both the same car though really).  These cars LOVE 80mph...its their sweet spot, but it does not take any time at all from 80mph to 100mph, these cars where built as cheap reliable motorway cars.  I would dread to think what the 1.8 and 2.0 where capable of.

Also twice we visited Mr T with our 2 and the focus before our downsize to a Sillycar, and twice, once I got going Kerstie struggled badly to keep up with our 1.6i Zetec.  And she doesnt drive slowly.

Okay then I'll take more care when attempting that again at that speed!  I was just saying that as the power is at the top of the rev range in the MR2 it will take a long time to get to a satisfactory rate of acceleration to catch up with a car (that you presume is slower) that is already wound up to its red line

IIRC the focus was about 3.5k revs at 80, and I also recal that the 2 was around 3.5k at 80mph.

Not sure why the focus seemed to accellerate better there.  I for one never felt comfortable in the 2 doing more than that anyway.

Tell me about it!

at a road construction site where the speed limit was 50km/h  I caught up to a red 911 carrera 2 from '99 or '00. An un-avoidable huge TURBO emblem on the back made me almost laugh as I knew I had no chance (not that I wanted to race but still...). Directly after the construction site the newly built freeway started. 3 of the 4 cars ahead of us changed directly into the right line and one slow Volvo decided to overtake them with the porsche and I right up behind. I left maybe a 2 meter gap between the 911 and myself and when seeing the volvo starting to change lanes I put in 2nd and nailed it and I think I was able to sit on his back for almost a second!   s:) :) s:)   ... but as mentioned above he just flew away into the distance and left me for dead!

A nice few seconds!

Take a look at the Graph I posted before showing MR2 versus 911 Turbo versus 350z and WRX, that's how much quicker a turbo is..look at the rate of aceleration.  The 911's is pretty much the same in the first three gears

So judging by that my turbo'd '2 will beat all of them into submission, and about equal a 911.Sweet..... OK off to find a 911 to laugh at   s:wink:  s:wink:

Ok just re-read it the 911 is about half a second quicker. But that's at 7psi, just tried 10psi today and i just couldn't keep the power down in any gear (bit wet here).

Sean you fancy bringing your gtech thingy with you on that Sunday? ... Meanwhile i'll carry on drifting this thread   s:oops:  s:oops:

er... I doubt it, never go with what a few numbers on a page tell you.  A 911 Turbo is seriously seriously fast and gets huge amounts of traction off the line with all the weight over the rear wheels.

0-60 maybe, but 60-150 na.

 s:lol:  s:lol:   I doubt it completely. s:roll:  s:roll:

That car is built for speed. The '2 with a turbo is stretching it too it's limit, a 911T in standard form is purring, a couple of turbo tweeks and it's a complete beast. It's like comparing Moet with Aspi spumante..... or Stella and Skol for you common people....Oh yeah that's me   s:wink:  s:wink:

Unlikely.

Ruling out the driver, who will make the single biggest difference in performance between cars (just because you own a porker, it doesn't mean you become magically imbued with the driving prowess of Derek Bell), a car like a 911 has quite simply been designed to handle far more power than an Mr2.  Also it's focus (certainly on any of the GT, CS or RS models) is far more towards performance than a Mr2 is.

The Mr2 is an inspired handler.  It's balance is superb.  But if you are talking grip here, the porker is in a different league.

As for comparing modified Mr2's to boggo porkers; I raise you any porker built by RUF   s:wink:  s:wink:

FWIW, I still want a 993RS.

On the Focus side of things, my wifes boss in work kept telling her his focus would kill my 2, its not an ST170 or anything just a 1.8 or 2.0 not sure which one. Picked her up from work two days ago, being me I drove fast to get next to him @ the lights.

On green my foot went to the deck. 1st he was with me, 2nd, 3rd -- I was pulling away about 15 car lenghs but not as much as I thought she would go. It was raining and she is not the same car in the rain so I slowed way down for a roundabout then back on the GAS on the next straight.

Probably would have been a mile down the road if the sun was shinning. But as a result he was back with me, next roundabout he got in front then there is a massive 70mph hill going over the next valley. Its about a 60 - 65 degree hill thats runs for a mile and a bit, my 2 used to hit about 85mhp flat out, with the BLITZ and cold air pipe, I hit about 90. But the focus was only 5 car lenghts away.

Speeding is not good but my manhood was at stake. No flaming me, i know its wrong.

*NEWS FLASH*  The Mr2 is not really that quick.  Enjoy it because it is fun.

If going faster than other things is your goal, you really bought the wrong car.

**NEWSFLASH**  s:roll:  s:roll:

The '2 is and can be fast. I can and am going faster than most other cars on the road.

I believe it is the RIGHT car.

I know its not quick, used to drive a 300zx twin turbo, but I thought a standard focus would be no problem for the 2,

I don't own a MR2, I have a VX220.

If you don't think the MR2 can be fast maybe you bought the wrong car.  The USA boys don't seem to have much trouble keeping up with "fast" cars (and bikes) at the Dragons Gap.  911's included.  Short wheel based, light 4 bangers own that road.
