Okay not the female variety, I am of course referring to those protectors that you seen on the front of American cars.. I was just wondering why they have never caught on elsewhere? Does America have more stone chips than anywhere else?

I'm thinking of pre-empting stone chips by maybe buying one from America that I can put on for the everyday grind..I know they look pants but if it stops the front gettting peppered it might be worth it..

Then again you'd probably get smashed at the back anyways..anyone else thought of this?

I did, but then thought: It looks crap (although not so bad on my black car), but... it might keep the paint looking nice, but when would you take it off? Whenever that is, it would still get chipped, so what's the point really?

Well I was thinking to keep it on during the week for commuting, then at the weekends taking it off.. 5/7 days with it on will significantly reduce the amount of damage IMO  They do look completely pants though..I saw some transclucent film also, but given the regularity that my car is cleaned it would probably come off quite easily. I think Paint guard is probably the best solution, but if memory serves me right its about £300, which i doubt very much you would recoop come trade in time...but would give me some peice of mind.  Has anyone had this done?

I have a paint treatment on mine (Autoglym Lifeshine) and although it makes the paintwork look fab and makes it easier to clean, it DOES NOT protect against stonechips, but then none of them are marketed as such.
The plastic film stuff is really good (and won't come off through washing) but again, is quite expensive and really needs to be applied to a perfect painted surface to start with.

Haha okay then! whoa that struck a cord Kris!

Sean where did you have the Auoglym applied? I currently have the enhanced polish, think its called extra protection (chocolate colour label)

I have seen one marketed as a paint protecting film which is sprayed on.. forget the name..have to have a look!

Cheers for the input!

Yeah, that's the plastic 3M manufactured stuff I was talking about, it's called InvincaShield IIRC

Made by 3m.  Just wondering how much you have to buy, whether it has to be in mega industrial batches..I'll email them and see

I think there was an article about Invinca shield either on SpyderChat or somewhere else on the web - I recall the MR2 was featured.

Don't get a bra - they do look crap.  I have also heard that they will cause the paint to 'bloom' (go whitish, like mould) if damp gets under them and stays there, as the surface can't breathe or something.  End result is the same as a big bunch of stone chips - respray time!

I always wondered what happend to 'ArmourGlaze' which was a hard clear lacquer coat you could get put on your car.  As a yoof, one of my Saturday jobs was to clean my dad's mate's Daimler - he had that Armourglazed, and the only paint damage was the red coachline where he used to let his keys bang against the drivers door when locking and unlocking it.  Otherwise, not a blemish.  Would be ideal for the '2.

I agree. IMHO there has only ever been one car that a bra suits and that's an MG BGT.
