Just thought I'd ask, because someone is sure to know what the catch is with Cataclean.

It's advertised by 3 dodgy looking blokes on Shop America (channel 637)and of course!! claims to clean dirty cats.

If you believe the claims, false callers, and supposed experts........... it reduces emissions from a MOT fail level to almost zero in five minutes.

So..... just out of interest, what's the deal with this stuff. Not that I'm going to buy it, but it would be good to know the catch (if any) and advise other people not to buy it.

Can't see how you would be able to clean a cat... it's job it to catch all the nasty stuff, surely if you then flushed all of that stuff out, you are defeating the object? Can't see the environmentalists approving!

The catalyst uses certain precious metals to cause chemical reactions between the exhaust gases, changing them from toxic pollutants to less toxic products. If the surface of the metal gets covered by stuff from the engine then catalysis becomes less efficient over time. Maybe this stuff cleans the surfaces off. Not had a look at the channel yet so can't comment on whether this is the case.

I apologise for the vagueness in advance, but I read somewhere (maybe new scientist) that they monitored the exhaust gases coming out of either a volvo or volkswagon in a busy european city (don't think it was in england) and found that the air was cleaner coming out of the car than going in.
