First off cool forum, I've lurked for sometime, now I need a little advice please.

My 2's due for a 4 week check over from Toyota, So far the car has been fine, loving every minute of it, very happy.

The only issue I've noticed other than water in my compartments (sorted now) is the engine does idle slighty low on occasions, Im going to mention this, but if any of you tell me what I should be telling the mechanics to look at that would be great. Plus if you can tell me anything I should mention to them just so they check (Known faults) it would be great also.

Thanks.

Hi Huddy, and welcome.
I am taking my '2 for it's check tomorrow. Mine idles low on occasion, does'nt seem to be a big problem, I think it may be a 'feature' unless someone wants to correct me.
I am going to mention;
Occasional squeak from front brakes when driving.
Drivers door rattle (not too worried, just want an opinion)
'Lumpy' soft top above side windows (again, not too worried, would like to see another '2 up close for comparison)
Quietness of alarm. Quite frankly I can fart louder and would like to know what can be done without affecting warranty & thatcham compliance.
At the end of the day, like me, you have spent a fair amount of money on a brand new car. Anything you are unhappy with, mention. And dont be fobbed off. I will let you know how I get on tomorrow.   s:wink:  s:wink:

If your car is new, the roof will need to be trained to get flat. Use a good conditioner like Turtlewax Roof Conditioner to help it out.

You can take the spare wheel out to make it louder but it could make the car more understeery   s:? :? s:?

go get em guys,

what rpm is low in your opinions?
and good luck getting the alarm sorted Dave, its because the sounder is under the spare wheel, but getting Mr.T to relocate it is nothing but impossible  s:evil:  s:evil:

Welcome to the forum, most of the things you have mentioned have been discussed before. You can see how people went on with these problems by searching for previous posts. I think mine apart from the squeaky brakes has pretty much all these problems.

It's interesting about the low idle, mine has been doing this for the past couple of months, but resetting the ECU has made it better.  It still 'hunt's occasionally, as though it's re-learning the idle revs.  Techs couldn't find anything at the 10,000 mile service.

Anyway here's a few threads to get you started looking for cures!

If it's any consolation, I get the low idle on occasion, and have done from new - and my MAF is cleaned and the ECU reset every three months.

Took my '2 in for its check up today, everything ok.
As for the issues I wanted to raise;
Q: Occasional squeak from front brakes. (Please note I said when driving, not when braking.)
A: Brakes are fine, not binding and I can take it back at any time for a further check if not happy. I will keep an eye on it, or rather an ear.
Q: Drivers door rattle.
A: More precisely the armrest, which has mysteriously cured itself,   s:? :? s:?  so I did not mention.
Q: 'Lumpy' soft top above windows.
A: Two other 2's in the car park looked exactly the same, so I answered my own question, ie a 'feature' not a fault, and I do have softop conditioner at the ready, assuming the rain stops for long enough!
Q: Quietness of alarm.
A: Service guy said it would be possible to relocate alarm sounder to engine bay, requiring rewire, and contacting my insurers to check thatcham compliance. He offered to look into it further. As this began to sound expensive and complicated, I thanked him but said I would stick with it as is.
Overall I have found the Toyota staff to be extremely helpful, knowledgeable and courteous. Overall, very impressed.

(And yes, I have used the search button for these topics before posting MRMike   s:wink:  s:wink:  )

Yep, exactly that.

AFAIK, that's a feature, not a bug. Most modern cars do just that, trying to find the lowest idle where the engine still runs smoothly. It's the best compromise between emissions and vibration. It does go "too low", only to find out that was too low, and then up the revs...

Remember that the '2 is an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle in US and idle@600rpm would mean 30% less emissions than idle@850rpm.
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

my 2 is a j-spec, would that explain why i get tick-over at 500-600rpm?

4 week check up?

I can't see any mention of this in the warranty book, or service manual.  Is this a requirement or did your local dealer suggest bringing it back after 4 weeks?

I bought mine 2nd hand (when 3 weeks old) and I asked the previous owner if it had to go back for an early check up.

Mine's 10 weeks old now and had no check.

Mine hasn't been for a 4 week checkup either  s:( :( s:(

My last car had one, but I got a letter from the dealer telling me to come in for one. As I never got one from Mr T, I assumed it never needed one ????? Hence it hasn't been for one, although I have no problems with it (touch wood)  s;) ;) s;)

I find this is a 'feature' of my car during warm weather.  Not helped by my Apexi breathing in warm air from the engine bay.  It's also not helped by the fact that I've had my manifold heatshield off for painting so the engine bay is now even hotter  s:roll:  s:roll:

Off topic I know but the three weeks was due to:

Owner had a lot of problems with previous MR2.  So ordered a new car (not an MR2).  Then tried to get a replacement MR2 due to history of faults.  Didn't get one but got a good discount on new one instead - which would be easier to sell than previous one.  So bought new one and immediately sold it - to me   s:D :D s:D

My dealer told me that not all Toyota dealers offer the free 4 week 'Health Check' as thay call it. From what I coud see it just seems to be a simple check that nothing is leaking, worked loose, tyre tread depth check ect. Also an opportunity to bring up any problems you may have.
