Turbo and insurance

Hey all,

Just a quick note of interest: I've just called up Adrian Flux (my insurers) to add on my spanky-new TRD spoiler to my policy, and thought while I was there I would just ask about a turbo conversion...

Basically, the nice lady I spoke to said that they were more than happy to insure a turbo'd '2, and all they needed to know was the BHP increase. Regarding the (obvious  s:wink:  s:wink:  ) increase in premium, they work it out as a percentage of your BHP increase/premium.

Example:

You turbo your MR2 to reach 200 BHP, up 60 from stock 140 (give or take): a total percentage increase of 43% (rounding off). Your current premium is £700, and 43% of that is £301. So the total premium they'd charge for a turbo'd MR2 with 200 BHP is £1001! (est)

Just a bit of info for anyone thinking of going down the turbo route. Like me.   s:D :D s:D

*[EDIT: Can a mod please move this to the 'Performance' forum please, for I am a berk who cannot post in the right place.   s:oops:  s:oops:   Ta.]*

As I mentioned in a previous thread, it all depends on the insurer. My new insurer (Brentacre) are only increasing my premium by just over £100, so it pays to look around.

Ah, but you're an old git.   s:wink:  s:wink:    s:lol:  s:lol:

Considering I'm only 24, that's the best offer I've found so far. Really, sometimes it's like being 15 again: in a few years' time, I'll be able to do whatever I want and not worry about it.   s:D :D s:D

Ah but do insurance companies dyno their customers cars?   s:wink:  s:wink:

I wouldn't like some oik thrashing my car on rollers to prove i was over the bhp quoted on my insurance schedule.

Whahay 400BHP   s:lol:  s:lol:

I did have one company insist on seeing a dyno plot and garage report before quoting - I thought that was quite amusing seeing as the turbo was only hypothetical until reasonable insurance was obtained!

I think the BHP is the only way they can quantifiably assess what difference a mod has made, always ammuses me when you say you've put a brace on and they ask has it changed the BHP.

I know my old man got in an argument about some mods on his GTR.  Because the official jap figure is 280bhp the 400bhp the car was now running resulted in a massive increase in his premium.  He then had to give them a dyno plot before and after which showed a standard car had 320bhp.

I know hat you mean MRMike, the hassle i had insuring my GTR this year was a nightmare, first a nice letter from A-Plan telling me that my insurer (AXA) would no longer be covering "Grey Imports" and concentrating its efforts on the domestic market.

Straight on the phone, asking them why this would effect me as my car was NOT a "Grey Import", but a full UK spec car from a UK Nissan Dealer, lots of mmmmm and rrrrrrr'ing then they come back to me with a huge quote!!

After phoning around about 25 compaines and getting a sore throat in the process' i ended up with  Liverpool Victoria, there not intrested in points on you licence (unless its drunk driving or a ban).

There is some debate about declaring mods with them, some employee's there tell you its as long as the CC has not been increased, other call center muppets say it is BHP. In the end and after several calls, which were recorded, so i just gave them my card details  s:D :D s:D  and i did'nt have to declare any mods, just need proof they were fitted.
