clutch got the squeeks...

Since a few weeks, a quite loud (and VERY embarrasing) squeek is heard when pressing the clutch pedal.
It comes and goes, it's not there all the time, and only when depressing the pedal, not when releasing it.  At first I thought it was the pedal itself (some linkage or bearing), but closer investigation showed the noise actually coming from the back of the car, and being much louder outside than inside...
I have read a post about this, but can't seem to find a remedy in it.

Anyone knows for sure what it is, and had it fixed?  If yes, what did they do and what was the cost?

FSTSVEN, The squeak referred to in the link that TEM has posted above is a thrust bearing problem, so it is constantly there when the clutch is disengaged.

I think this is a different beast from the noise you refer to, for the simple reason that my '99 MR-S is suffering from both!!

The american Spyderchat forum also confuses the two, but I found a reply to one of the postings which says:

"Had the same problem on a Honda. IIRC it was the clutch slave cylinder that needs to be lubed....where the shift cable (no cables on the Honda...ours has 'em though) enters the tranny there was a little rubber boot that sealed it. They would pry the rubber boot away and squirt some grease in there. Just like 143Hawaii, it would go away for a little while, then come back....so I don't worry about it when it does happen. It doesn't squeek that was for me very often anyways."

Not quite sure what this means (cos I don't speak 'merican!), and haven't fixed my pedal-push squeak either, but it certainly sounds like a cable/lever/spring-type noise at the rear end.

Hopefully we can keep this thread alive and reach a solution.

although mine only seems to squeak once every two weeks, so im not TOO bothered about it right now, unless it starts happening more often...

At least it distracts from the fact that my engine sounds like a sewing machine when idling at the lights.  s:lol: :lol: s:lol:  Maybe liberal use of the car stereo is the answer! (I feel a group buy for a "sexy car noises" CD coming on!)

Wouldn't hear it anyway through all the rattles, tyre noise, wind noise and (happily!) engine noise    s:lol: :lol: s:lol:    s:lol: :lol: s:lol:    s:lol: :lol: s:lol:  

On a more serious note, mechanic had a quick look today, but of course it wasn't doing it now...    s:? :? s:?

I have the rattling noise from the clutch but the Toyota mechanice thinks it's coming from my Apex'i induction kit and he wants me to fit the old airbox before he does anything.  Since when does an airfilter make a metalic rattling noise?!   s:roll: :roll: s:roll:

Sounds like a red herring Lee, unless your mechanic has had a good poke around? The only Apexi rattle I've come across is if the heat shield is vibrating against the car's own shield.

Is your clutch rattle constantly there, or does it come and go with de-clutching/engine revs?

I don't use the heat shield.  It comes once the engine/clutch is warm, it goes when I depress the clutch pedal and comes back as soon as I take my foot of the pedal.

That sounds like the characteristic thrust bearing thing then, unless there's something obviously loose in the linkage.

Even got a tad louder now, but i noticed a pattern in the way it comes and goes:
When the engine is cold, the clutch doesn't squeek.  Then, after, say, 2-3 miles, as the engine starts to warm up a bit, the noise starts (only when depressing the pedal, not when releasing it). And then, after about 10-15 miles, as the engine is completely warmed through, it goes again...

Any ideas?

I seem to have similar problem - Clutch squeaks sometimes when depressed, noise is louder outside than inside and comes from engine bay.
There is no relation between when it squeaks and doesn't.

Take today for example:
Got in car, depressed clutch - no squeak.
When i started the engine the clutch squeaked for the duration of the journey (about 5-6 miles).
On the way back 2 hours later there was no squeak at all.

Is it anything to worry about?

is it likely to be covered by extended warranty?

Mine still squeeks, it gets even worse...   s:( s:(  

It also seems to be related to the outside temperature: I have found it to be much worse when temperatures rise.  When it's freezing cold, it squeeks for a shorter amount of time, and less loud...

So far, everything still seems to be working fine, so I haven't had it looked at, but if it's still there in the spring (when topless driving is on the menu   s:D s:D   ) I'll have it checked.

On a side note, I find it rather strange that nobody on the forum has an explanation or a solution.  Are there so few cases of this (annoying!) problem?

Sometimes people just don't care to post the same stuff again...my noise went away with a new bearing (and TRD disc, pressure plate and flywheel, but I doubt that made a difference)
