Advice in getting the right braided hoses

OK

So I'm going to take the next step for a non techy novice and buy a vacuum brake bleeding kit.

Does anyone know what size line spanner I need for the bleed nipple?

Also I am going to try and upgrade to braided hoses at the same time.

I'm not looking to spend fortunes and not fussed if they aren't names like HEL or Goodrich, so long as they're not ebay rip off pieces of junk!

Will I need a different sized line spanner for the brake line nuts or will it be the same? (also are MRS bolts different in size from the UK spec MR2?)

What would be the best, realistic set of braided hoses to get for occasional track days (not going racing - yet) and any suggestions as to the best place to buy them from?

Thanks again

Frankly, it's HEL or crap. Some say Goodridge are better but more expensive.
If you look on Camskill they do braided hoses. I ordered those and got HEL lines... So they must be the same.

GT4-Play, an affiliate on here, does a good deal on HEL lines and you get some new clips with it which you need.
All else stays the same. Take note; there is a difference between the front and back lines  s:) :) s:)   it's a very subtle difference in angle of the connector.

After seeing what happened with toms I would only get goodridge.

I've never heard complaints about HEL until Tom had issues. And frankly I think that was because of his wheels or something , I believe he mentioned something along those regards.

As far as brake lines are concerned, I have used both, without issue. I did contribute to a useful thread, a few years back, with detailed pics of the Hel fittings, that we had thoughts on,which may be of use.
To the best of my knowledge, Tom's issue wih the Hel line, was not related to those end fittings though. I have seen some lines routed perilously close to the inside of the tyres though, so sensible fitting is advised.

Op as to my comment with not going hel, it is nothing to do with quality or the fittings on the end so much. But it is to do with how well clamped the pipe is to stop it rubbing. So you could say its a design issue rather than a quality issue.

've got some HEL hoses for mine, as with anything that is safety related you should always double check.

Thanks for all of your replies.

When you say how well clamped the pipe is, I'm assuming that the clamp is a different thing to the clip that comes with the hoses now on GT4Play's site?

I've yet to look, but isn't there a clamp there already for the original lines?

Also, can anyone clarify the size of line spanner I'm going to need for my MRS import?

I think I saw somewhere it's M7?

Yes it's 7mm on mine, I had to buy a spanner specially for it...

In terms of bleeding kit, I bought one of those one man kits and it was no good as air was tracking back in round the nipple thread on pedal release. Don't know if the vacuum ones are better. I went old school in the end with the missus doing the pedal whilst I did the nipple (impossible not to sound smutty..) and it was far better.

My issue with the hels regardless of wheel width is that the middle bracket is not fixed so is free to move. However the stock and good ridge are fixed so that hose isnt going anywhere.

All you need is the clip / bracket

I don't get the "free to move"  thing either. It's a direct replacement for the stock lines. It clamps onto the strut. I just needed some replacement clips as the stock ones were flat as a pancake

Hel should supply them 100% agreed.

Patrick the plastic mount on the line bolts into the strut but the plastic mount isnt fixed in position to the hose, so the hose can be pulled through the mount a clip would sort this.

Ah yes indeed. It's to allow flexibility in the wheel moving up/down. But fixed is stock.

Just checked my HEL lines. 100% ok

Here is a picture of my HELs and you can see the clip Tom is talking about.

I think the idea is that you can pull the line through the plastic clip to suit each car so that they are not strained at any time, presumably they think friction will then be enough to hold it there?

The clips GT4 play supply in their package are to secure the lines to the body as they would pull through the toyota brackets otherwise.

If I remember rightly the HELs were about £30 cheaper than the goodridge when I bought mine.

I think the clip on the strut is pretty much the same on the Goodridge lines too. Mine allow movement of the line independant of the clip.

Fair play tho Gt4 its a job well done, the hel feel like from the factory a more universal line where as the good ridge are made more for the job.
