Larger oil filter

Hi all,

Just a quick question on this as I am currently looking into the oil system, I have heard that some people are fitting the OEM 2zz oil filters onto the 1zz engine due to a larger capacity - are there any other oil filters people are using to increase the oil capacity of the 1zz at all?

I can't see it making a significant difference.  You're right, though the sump is too small.

I know that the stock oil filter is quite small for the 1zz but looking at some guides and photos there seems to be quite a bit of space under there, looks like the engine only takes 3.8 litres so even just 200ml more oil means a 5% increase in capacity - I guess you would go for the aftermarket sump for track use though.

Another option would be to add an oil cooler to increase capacity

I put the Gpan3 on my 2zz and it took the capacity up to nearly 6 litres!

Teehee. G-Pan. Like the gangster version of the normal pan. Haha

... Well that was my contribution

Personally i would have thought that by increasing the filter capcity you would put the oil pump under more load ( it would not be massive increase, but don't some improve oil pumps on 2ZZ swaps). Thats my analysis anyway.

As said above if you want larger oil capacity, new sump or oil cooler sound better options.
🚘Just a pass time to break the monotony

Forgive my ignorance but knowing how many people track their mr2 rather frequently and successfully with the stock sump (and 2zzs with the 1zz sump),... What's the problem?

The Gpan doesnt just have larger capacity is has a central oil pickup chamber with hinged valves to only allow in into it so it largely removes the issue of oil slosh under lateral G and the the pickup sucking air instead of oil causing zero oil pressure and bearing/pump death.
The Larger capacity has other added benefits such as keeping the oil cleaner and cooler as there is more of it and the pan is all ali.
There is no negative impact on the oil pump in fact its a positive impact as the oil pump cant handle any air getting to it as the shock kills the pump and shortly there after the engine goes. This isnt an advert for the particular Pan but if you drive either 1zz or 2zz hard on corners you need to baffle the sump or dry sump if money is no object. On my S2000 engined Dax rush I found people that would sell just a laser cut ali baffle plate and I could get it welded in to the original S2000 ali sump but no such support seems to exist for the Toyota engines.
