Hi Guys,

I am really well and truely freaked out, I need some calming words!!  s:shock:  s:shock:
I took the MR2 (2001) out twenty minutes ago and after about five minutes of driving the bottom middle light in the right hand guage came on.  Its the one that looks like a mini engine between the battery light and another one that i cant remember.  The problem is im at work for another couple of hours so i cant get back to look into the cars hand guide to see what the problem is.  After reading the pre cat stories all things are going through my mind, please somebody tell me that ive imagined the sign looks like an engine and really its something trivial!!!!

Can't really speculate until you take it to the dealers, but it could be something as trivial as a broken maf sensor if its the same light im thinking it is.

Don't worry until you have to, could just be a wet sensor

Hey Linz, any chance you recently filled her up and didn't close the plastic cap tight enough?  s8) 8) s8)
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

Hi

I think it's  the 'Engine Malfunction' warning light that has come on.  The handbook suggets that you take your car to the Toyota Dealer as soon as possible (although I notice that it does not instruct you to do so immediately as per other warning lights!).

For what it's worth, my warning light came on a few weeks back to indicate that I have a damaged oxygen sensor adjacent to the catalytic converter.  My local Toyota dealer said the car was fine to drive.  Since then, I have driven 1200+ miles with the warning light still engaged.

If the problem is not something simple like a loose plastic fuel cap, I would take the car to be inspected, as a damaged sensor (or the like) could lead to increased fuel consumption or may revert the vehicle into it's 'safe' mode.

Cheers guys   s:D :D s:D

Thanks for the reassurance   s:wink:  s:wink:

When i drove the car back last night the light remained on so i took it easy. I dont know if it was me panicking but im sure the engine sounded noiser??!.
Anyways im going to get a local garage to have a look at it first to see if they can see anything wrong with it intially.  If its only a small problem i will get the garage to sort it however if its major i might get MR T to take a look. Funny enough i had rang MR T last week to request extended warranty so i might wait till i get that before i take the car in (thats if i need to), fingers crossed i wont! I will keep you informed.

Afternoon Linz,

I would definitely get an extended warranty – even a new oxygen sensor will cost £200 +!!

I have just bought an extended warranty and if I had done so a month earlier, I would have saved £1300 due to my recent pre-cat failure problems!  Nevermind, it's only the cost of a Holiday to Mexico, bugger!!!

I don't want to worry you, but my 'warning light' came on because the oxygen sensor was damaged by severe overheating of the Catalytic converter (Toyota's diagnosis).  The blockage was due to my broken pre-cat disc, which had fallen into the Cat.

I'm sure this may not be the case for your car and it'll be a simple Engine Management issue,  but do keep an eye (or ear!) on the sound of the engine and get it to Toyota once you have the warranty sorted – particularly if the engine gets louder or if you suffer a sudden loss of power!

The very first sign of my pre-cat failure was an increase in the sound level of the engine, so it's better to be safe and sorry!

Where from? New Toyota items are around the £70 mark, and aftermarket sensors can be had for half that.

Hell's Fire!

I was quoted £174 (+VAT) for a new O2 sensor by my local Toyota Dealer in North Wales!

The damaged sensor is the one at the exhaust end of the cat - not those in the Manifold.  Would that make a difference in cost?

I don't think I will be buying one through Toyota!

Cheers!

Cheers jon36038!   s:o :o s:o  Even though youve scared me a little i feel that i now have the knowledge to stop a complete disaster occuring!!

Only problem ive got is that if i look at worse case scenerio and the engine is about to die due to the pre cats, wont the toyota garage inspect the car and hear the increase in loundess and not give me the extended warranty?. Am i right in assuming that they will check the car over before giving the extended waranty? It would really hit me hard in the pocket if i had to pay for something as huge as a new engine! Ive just had a new body kit fitted and alloys and am totally skint  s:cry:  s:cry:

No, they are exactly the same, it's just that the cable is longer on the one in the exhaust.

thats probly why my '2 didnt indicate a CEL then when the precats colllapsed as its a j-spec and dont have that 3rd sensor on the main CAT.

The 3rd sensor can only tell if the main cat goes, you won't get a CEL if the precats go.
(otherwise everyone who gut them would get a CEL as well  s;) ;) s;)  )

I work for a company who sells car parts to the aftermarket,

unfortunatley we dont do an aftermarket cat, but we do sell geniune ones, i'll check out what we do in the way for lambda sensors & maybe able to sort out some sort of discount for members (garage rate).

i know but the main cat was knackered though as it was clogged up with pre cat and the fibre glass stuff that supports the pre cats.

btw, just bolted on a new cat and my '2 drives like a dream again! feels rapid!

Yeah, but the 3rd sensor is happy as long as it sees a difference between itself and the 1st two, which I assume even a clogged cat makes. I know I never saw a CEL when my precats collapsed and not during the 1000km's with the clogged cat  s:? :? s:?
