I have recently bought my first mk3 . Can anybody shed any light why the handbreak  is none existent.  All the cables are free and calipers.  It only went through its test last month. It doesn't look good carrying a brick around to stop it rolling away. Ha ha

Try this for a start, if no joy then there's a brake caliper strip down guide on the forum.

No worries. If you read the "what have you done to mr2 today" thread most recent pages, you can read member  the other stu
on going battle with MOT and handbrake, lots of good tips in it.

Get used to it my friend.
Handbrakes can be a real bugger to get right.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Hope you get some decent weather next weekend.  Bloody handbrakes on these cars -its a really common problem.  Most people I know with roadsters always park in gear 'cause the near certainty the handbrake gremlins will be back!
1MZFE, Emerald ECU, LSD, BC coilovers, custom middle & front under brace, F / R strut brace. Slotted discs & yellow pads, Blue flame exhaust.
Carrera leather seats, Davids bars, Focal subwoofer & voce speakers & bling !
TRD Stage 2 F & R spoilers,  Haltezza bonnet, C1 side vents, JDL rear panel

Good point, I do it now without even thinking. Becomes a very useful habit.

Ha ha, indeed. What I don't know about handbrakes right now probably isn't worth knowing!

Have a read of the advice Carolyn gave - you probably need to reset the handbrake.
Follow this guide to the letter and you'll not go wrong. Read it though, it seems a little confusing, but it sets the piston first.

Just had a look at Mum's and the difference is astounding.

It's no effort at all to pull the lever, and if you do it with your foot on the pedal, you can feel something happening underfoot as you pull the handbrake. Same in my Mini.

Whereas my mr2 (new cables at Xmas) is stiff as a  sbastard bastard sbastard , doesn't hold particularly well, and there's no feel through the pedal. Pair of new calipers due I fear.
