How do you adjust the brake pedal height?

Any help gratefully received:

I'm trying to get my brake pedal to sit 'higher'. Ideally I'd like to take it out 1.5-2.5 cm; so that when it's fully depressed it still sits about 0.5-1.5 cm higher than the throttle pedal.

Can anyone tell me how to adjust the brake pedal position?

Thanks much!

Isn't there an adjuster rod behind the pedal?

Height of the pedal is dictated by the brake-light switch which is a fixed position. Any adjustment behind the pedal will be pre-load on the master cylinder.

I needed to modify so I could heel and toe.  I have a bad right foot, so I needed to do something to the throttle pedal.  I made up a special plate.  Perhaps you could add something to the face of the brake pedal?

This was the bit I made (attaches behind the throttle pedal):

If this is a heel toe issue, aside from Carolyn's sweet mod (which I want btw..hint), maybe you're suffering from the floppy accelerator pedal?
On both cars I've had to adjust it at the throttle body to take out slack.
Before that, when heel toeing,it would just sink through the slack and not actually rev

Yeah, I had to do that too to remove a dead section of travel. There's also enough play in the locating bolts of the pedal bracket that you can swing it over to be nearer to the brake pedal if you desire.

+2 on the throttle cable. Almost no slack....  makes a massive difference.

Sounds more like the OP is wanting exactly the opposite to H&T - he wants the throttle pedal lower than the brake pedal at full push. Probably having trouble with inadvertently mashing both pedals at the same time.

Good point.  So a 10 mm plate bolted to the front of the brake pedal would do that job.  The opposite (but a variation) of the bit I added.

Just be weary of MOT. If they deem the face to be insufficiently grippy,it's a fail.

In the rocket car, I have anti-slip covering glued to the face of the pedals.  Similar stuff that is laid on outside steps.

something like this:

First off - appreciate all the input!

And yes - you're all right - it's about getting the pedals comfortable for heel'n'toe, and just smoothly sliding across.

Carolyn - used your design already to make similar. Used cut, layered, riveted 5mm ally plate (instead of milled block) as I don't have a mill). Thanks!

Also I doubled the thickness of the rubber bump stop at the back of the throttle pedal to take out slack in cable. (I can't actually see any way to get the the throttle body for adjustment - if there is any - on my 2zz without a car lift/ramps.)

However I'm still left with the brake pedal not as high as I'd like when it's fully depressed.

SteveJ - if I were to modify the brake light switch location, could I increase the pre-load on the brake master cylinder to raise the pedal? Would anything else be affected?

If instead I went for the 'thickener' plate attached to the brake pedal - is it possible to remove the pedal without affecting anything else? (Trying to drill it in the footwell with a close fitted fixed bucket seat and cage would a good start to military T.Q. session).

Thanks for the advice,
Maz

On the IZZ there is adjustment on the cable at the throttle body.  My understanding is that the 2ZZ is similar.  You might want to remove the inlet pipe for easier access.

found this pic (it's a 2ZZ)

2zz is the same throttle cable system.

When I did mine (1zz) I did it from underneath. Nappies removed, car high-ish on stands. Lying on back and reaching up. May have undone the nut from the top. Was a long time ago.

Do it from the top, honest, it's easier.

I couldn't do it from the top! I tried. Ended up going underneath

Hmmm...  I've done several.  All from the top.  I do get the inlet tube out of the way, and give it a good spray.  Maybe it's just smaller fingers?
