Hi, attempting my first oil & filter change. Tried removing filter by hand, but too tight. Tried using a chain type filter removal tool, but filter won't budge. I've punctured filter, so can't just top up again and put back together. Erm, please help  s:( :( s:(   bit worried about how long I can leave the engine drained of oil

Whack a big screwdriver through it and undo it with that

Wouldn't worry about it. Just don't run it, obviously.

Stick a great big screwdriver through it and use that to unscrew it.

Or,as I do, plumber pliers. Grab that sucker, doesn't matter if it gets squashed. Coming off anyway.

Thanks all, feeling quite heroic now. Just finished first ever air filter replacement (blitz lm panel filter I got from E2V), first ever spark plug change and now first ever oil & oil filter change. Busy day. Back driveway looks like a massacre. Last job is to get creative with tie wraps and a Dremmel, only
3 bolts left for mid section trim, managed to shear 2 during removal.
I will never talk badly about mechanics after today,  s:) :) s:)

I have a cheap set of oil filter sockets, seem to do the trick although they are really only meant to be screwed on hand tight.

That's what I should have done yesterday rather than struggling for about an hour with a strap wrench. I seemed to recall someone saying that the screwdriver method was a really bad idea though.

This should probably  be a last resort as if you have a really tight filter you can potentially cut the filter in half with your screwdriver and then have a right mess to get off....

Its a bit like always making sure that the fill plug is undone (on say a gearbox) before undoing the drain plug as if the fill plug is stuck then there is no way to refill a drained box - if you pierce the oil filter the car is out of action until its replaced.
