Dropped my car into the garage to diagnose a rattle - turns out its the water pump this time.

They quoted a lot for parts (150 for parts from mrT and 120 for parts from eurocarparts) - thats for water pump and belt. Is it  standard practice to replace the belt when replacing a water pump?

A water pump should cost no more than £25, for a decent aftermarket one. ( m http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KEYPARTS-WATE ... 2749.l2649 m  )  I know it says 'for Auris' but it's correct for any 1ZZ.

Belt about the same.  Unless the belt has been replaced in the last year or two, replacing it can't hurt.

Total job time no more than one hour.

I'd go to another garage for a second opinion, as it does not seem that they have your best interest at heart.

Haha. What a very polite way to put it, and what excellent advice, well done again.

On two occasions, when Mr T " looked after" my 2  a leaking water pump was diagnosed. Around three years later I can still find no trace of a leak from the same pump.
However, there was no rattle associated with the 'leak', so, just maybe, the water pump can rattle as well as leak!
As above, other professionals are available.

Laurence, just had a chat with the garage next door to me and they reckon they could do the whole job for £150 inc parts.

Given all of the above.  I would suggest taking your car elsewhere (preferably recommended by a friend), and don't mention the pump.  See what they come up with.

Yes that is their hourly rate, pretty average for my area, not even the dearest on the industrial estate where I work.

Am I correct to say that the 2zz pump is an upgrade?

Stupid question, I take it you must loose some coolant when you change the water pump, are you likely to get an air blockage?

The 2zz will go on, uses a bolt-on pulley and needs a slightly longer belt.  It does shift more coolant.

Yes you'll loose coolant.  Usual top - up and bleed procedure.

Which garage, i booked it in to the one just round the corner from you - summertown garage. My usual garage was fully booked for 2 weeks.

just to throw a small spanner in the works, all pulleys seem to rattle on this engine.
Could easily be one of the others or more than one.

The reason my 1ZZ is so quiet:  New idler pulley.  New Alternator.  New water pump.  New belt tensioner pulley.  New chain tensioner.  Carefully adjusted valve clearances.

I do feel, however, that a worn chain tensioner is very often the overlooked culprit.  1ZZs do tend to rattle and also tend to keep on going.

cheers for the the responses. Got the issue fixed now - it was the water pump. Had a look at changing it myself, but due to the lack of space figured I'd let someone with a ramp have a go at it, and save my knuckles.

Nice and quiet now on idle.

Beings I'm draining my coolant shortly to replace the radiator and run the turbo coolant lines, is it worth doing the water pump at the same time?
Not sure when it was last changed

I always put a new one on when I do a rebuild.  If it spins quietly, no wobble and doesn't leak, then I'd leave it.  Not a massive job to do if and when it gives up.
