Hi Im looking at booking in for 10,000 service (66,000 on the clock owned since new), local garage are happy if I buy the bits. I've been reading about the K&N 33-2041-1 Replacement Air Filter which has some very good reviews and is a permanent air filter that only need be cleaned approx every 4/5 years, apparently they are great for performance as well. Secondly I'm changing my plugs and usually fit Toyota branded Iridium plugs every 4 years, I've never had an issue with them, excellent start and very good when running so I'm going to stick with these unless anyone has a better alternative to suggest. Cheers   s:) :) s:)

Get a cheap stock cotton panel filter and replace it every 6 months. It'll take 3 years to recover the cost of a k&n panel...which doesn't filter as well...by which time you really need to replace the k&n anyway. It doesn't stack up

Plugs, copper cheap plugs of the correct spec and replace every year. Same story.

Alternatively a good set of Iridium and change every 2

The stock panel flows enough air for a 2zz in lift, there's no way it's detrimental to the performance of a 1zz engine. Stick with that!

Took everyone's advice and had stock parts fitted copper plugs, standard filter, Toyota oil filter etc that I bought and just paid for labour so £130 in total. I haven't had time to take it for a proper run yet but I'm sure its fine, its always run really well so probably wont see much of a difference anyway. Thanks for responding. Have a nice Xmas

Good call and satisfying knowing it's done.

Nice one. Good to go for another 6 months to a year.
130+parts twice a year to keep the car at its best is a small price to pay  s:) :) s:)

D'you ever fancy trying minor service yourself? Understand if you want to keep the service record, but I did my first ever quite recently, and it was really satisfying when finished. I'm a complete novice, so trust me if i can do it i'm pretty sure anyone could  s:) :) s:)  .
And as an example of what £130 will get you, Just a thought, but:
Spark plugs ~ £10
Air filter ~ £10
Oil filter ~ £5
Oil filter sump washer ~ £2
Oil ~£30
Spark plug removal set ~ £22
2 tonne axle stands ~ £20
2 tonne trolley jack ~ £30
=total ~£129 first minor service, then ~ £55 per minor service thereafter +1-3 hours of your time, maybe less

Hi years ago I used to do a bit like when I had a Vauxhall Viva, Datsun Sunny and the horrible Morris Marina but to be honest £70 for labour, they have all the tools hydraulic lift etc etc plus I don't have to dispose of the old oil its not really worth the effort or time. I do build all my own computers and have done for 20 years but its clean, indoors pretty easy but still satisfying.  I still do bits I can when possible tbh if I was paying Toyota prices I would do a lot more as their charges are beyond ridiculous.

If you can get a bucket from toolstation (less than £5) and a big 5 litre empty water bottle, you can dispose your oil at the local recycling centre for free.

Service on its own is about 30-40 minutes at best. No complicated tools needed or ramps even.

A nice thing to do on a Sunday morning before heading out for a drive  s:) :) s:)
I can't recall a day when I drove my MR2 and it didn't put a smile on my face

Or you could use a vacuum oil pump and not need to remove the sump plug, just unscrew the oil filter etc.
