Hi, my MR2's just failed mot on emissions, the first idle where it's supposed to be lower than 0.3, was reading 0.7 to 0.8.
I picked the car back up from them, took it for long fast run, got car red hot, retested no difference in the readings.
It's got Toyosports manifold, manifold lamba sensors when new 2 years ago, probably original cat in place (52 reg car), don't know about the other sensors.
It's running standard set up air intake wise, etc.
Anybody any ideas what it could be or is it impossible to say?

Probably time for a new cat.  Cats 2U.

As Carolyn says, probably the main cat, check out cats2u for a replacement - my car has a decat manifold and main cat and is fine on emissions - guessing you don't have any engine check lights?

Thanks for the replies, no engine check lights on or anything, I've been thinking it's the cat, it's booked in on the 3rd January to be diagnosed to see what it could be, fixed and re-mot'ed, but not looking forward to the garage bills when I could fit the parts myself if I had them and knew what the problem was.

AS you are only in Derby, you could do a lot worse than than make contact with Steve at D1 Customs. see the affilates section.
Based in loughborough 5mins off the M1.
Highly recomended on here and will not rip you off. Diagnostics is his thing.
We are not just talking plugging a code reader in.
He uses genuine Toyota diagnostic equipment, not some third party product.
Give him a call.

Thanks for the offer pal, but I think I would prefer to fit a new cat if it needs one, there not to expensive online, unless you ring national tyres who want £950 to fit one!!!

Cheers Ardent, I'll give him a ring tomorrow.

Have you cleaned the MAF, disconnected the battery, check the fuel trims simple things like loose inlet hose can cause fueling issues.
If you pop up to Bolsover we can read your fuel trims, that will give you an idea.
RACING, because football, cricket, rugby and golf only need ONE BALL

No I've not checked anything like that Steve, I might contact you tomorrow if that's ok, I'll pm you my number etc.

Might be worth getting yourself one of those cheap OBD2 readers as they are really handy to check things like codes and fuel trims as well as live data - only cost a few £s

Well worth having regardless of issues or not.

It's pasted it's MOT! I had a diagnostic done this morning at a local garage, found no faults whatsoever on the report with anything on the car. They suggested it could be the spark plugs.
I change the oil yearly (only done 8000 miles in two years of ownership) but not done spark plugs in it, so put new plugs in today, old ones weren't black or sooty just looked like they've been in along time, fitted new air filter (old one wasn't bad at all), and bottle of Cataclean in the tank.
Just took it for retest, passed no problem.

Thats great news and a good call by your mechanic. FYI you can buy a service kit at most Toyota dealers. Oil, oil filter, air filter and plugs for around £40 if you ask nicely
🚘Just a pass time to break the monotony

That's great news, good to hear another MR2 is on the road  s:D :D s:D  what plugs were they that were taken out? I changed the plugs over as soon as I got the car to some basic NGK plugs - they had the more expensive Iridium plugs in when I got the car but the plugs were very worn. You should also notice a bit better throttle response and power now that the fuel and air is exploding properly in the engine!

It had the same plugs in that I have replaced them with, basic NGK plugs.
