Hi All,

I'm trying to touch up areas of paint (leading edges of under frunk slam panel mainly), but have noticed that in my case, the paint finish is a dull/matt version of the body colour (Sable Grey, 1E3), shown below.

Does anyone know of a match for this? I'd like to get as close as possible rather than Hammerite grey or black.

Regards,
Nick

It looks to me a bit like there is no lacquer on the under bonnet area hence the lack of shine.

Are you coming to Ding day? If so, you could probably get it done there by the paint guy.

Its no lacquer for definite as my Red looks the same in the front and engine compartment.

I'm pretty sure everyone has this issue...I know I have. To me it looks like it's just been painted in a base coat with no lacquer as previously mentioned...I've thought about lacquering mine both front and back but it's a lot of masking that's for sure

Off topic, I know, but that is a very tidy looking engine compartment.  I'd love to be able to get mine looking as good as that.  Other than the non-standard heat wrapping on the manifold, I'd almost think it was a brand new car.  Beautiful job.

Thank you for your kind words...I do like to keep it clean.
I never actually fitted the wrapping nor the manifold for that matter and I'm looking to tidy it up at some point. I think people ( like yourself) love to see an immaculate engine bay.
My Celica engine bay looks fairly tidy too. [emoji4]

Again, very nice indeed and you're right, I do like to see a nice clean engine bay.

I do try to spend time cleaning up my engine bay and I'd say that mine will be quite a bit cleaner than "Joe Average" keeps his bay but time has taken its toll on under the engine lid of my 2 and there are a few bits with stubborn surface rust, scratches and whatever.  Eventually I suppose it could all be corrected but even last weekend I was cleaning various inaccessible nooks and crannies and thinking to myself that I might be the first person ever to clean those bits over the entire 18 year life of my car.

You're probably right, probably never been cleaned before. I'm lucky with mine that there is no rust at all anywhere...the paint has some variation in colour but it's all solid with no rust...so it has the potential to be a top class car when I finally sort the paint.

Very clean - nice work.

Just to come back to topic briefly, what would the general consensus be - after tidying up, rub back, treat and then paint in body colour? My intention is to paint the slam panel up to the rubber stops (2-3 inches above the slam panel either side of the headlights).

I suppose once covered again with the plastic shroud it won't make too much difference, I'd just like it to be tidy.

Topdownman - seems a bit mean to get the paint guy to spend ages on something you don't see!

There's nothing wrong with rubbing it down and treating and then protecting it with paint even if you can't see it...at least you'll know it's nice under there and now no longer rotting away

@Topdownman

Simon doesn't mind about monopolising the paint guy.
Does it every year.

I thought it was very generous of Simon to offer his painter to someone else for 5 mins :P
