I've just phoned my dealer to book my roadster in for its 4th year service. I think it is supposed to be at 40,000 miles but I am only up to 28,000. They quoted me £255 - is that a bit steep? The last service was only £90! I asked why the big jump and they said it was because of having to fit new sparkplugs. Can anyone recommend somewhere in the Hampshire/West Sussex area that do a good job at a reasonable price? My local dealer is WKB in Waterlooville. They have just had a major refurbish so I guess that is being added to their charges.

I've just had my 40K, and with MOT it came to a smidgen over 300quid.

IIRC I paid about £160 for the 40k on my old '2.

I paid nearly £200 for mine and I only had 30-ishK on the clock too. I think it depends on dealer. They all fluctuate...........

I reckon what you have been quoted is a middle of the road figure.........

As you have quite a low mileage for the age, see if they will inspect rather than automatically replace certain items. Oil will degrade with time, but spark plugs and air filters for example won't. It may be that the plugs you have are fine. That may reduce the cost somewhat - if they will play ball of course.

The last service was only an oil change and inspection of basics like brakes and tyres.  4 yrs or 40k is spark plug change time I think. The owners manual explains all this.  You are also probably due a 2-yearly brake fluid change.

I phoned around and got a price somewhere else of £180 which is more like it. I also phoned an independent garage who specialise in Toyota and they quoted £90+vat, which seems too good to be true.
Another question, if I want to extend my warranty at a later date (it ran out last year), will I have had to have had it serviced at a Toyota dealer prior to taking out the extended warranty?

The law says that it does not have to be by the dealer as long as the independent garage completes to the same standard using the correct Toyota parts. Sometimes its easier to sell with a service book full of dealer stamps though, and it can help if you try an claim out of warrenty for a blown engine etc. It's you choice at the end of the day mate  s:wink:  s:wink:

Now mine is out of warranty I am going to a Toyota Specialist garage for my 50K service, they serviced my Mums car recently (ok only a Starlet) but they did a really good job on it, much better service than Mr T dealership.

Buy your own parts, use NGK plugs, Shell 5W40 and ADL (o.e) filters from an IFA motor factor it will come to about £35 all in (tell them you are a car trader and you normally get discount).

Nearest IFA motor factor click on link >   m http://www.imtfa.co.uk m

Then take it to Toyota just to do labour which should be £60 tops, tell them just to fit the parts, change oil and stamp your book. You can oil the hinges and check your brakes yourself!  All you need is that authentic stamp in your book at the end of the day.

What did they actually do at a 40,000mile service?
I will replace my air filter myself and have iridium plugs so what a toyota trying to charge me £265 for?

First post!!!

I picked up my 2002 MR2 last week and am in the same position as you regards servicing. Mine is nearly 4 and has done just 25k. (fTSH till now)

I had a quote of £290 for the 4 year / 40k vs £100 for the annual. I asked why, they said it was plugs, air filter and brake fluid..
Hmmmmm expensive parts!!

My view is that it is not strictly necessary to do the plugs and air (or I could easily do them myself) but I may have a normal service plus brake fluid.

I then phoned the dealer and it turns out they do a fixed price 'annual' service of £79 which I assume is to lure in non T and older cars. Asked if there was any difference, apparently not - so am going to book mine in on this

So, annual service plus brake fluid should be £100ish. At these levels, it seems hardly worth going to an independent (who i am sure would do a good job) and missing out on the T stamp.

I hope my local dealer does the fixed pricing for older cars when I have my 4th service is 13months time  s:wink:  s:wink:

Got the service done and was very suprised to find out that didn't include changing the brake fluid - that was another £60. Also that didn't include changing the coolant! That was another £60 also!   s:shock:  s:shock:

Apart form the price I was very happy with the service though.

I don't understand how it can have not included the brake fluid change.  Brake fluid change is part of the 20k service - it's not a 20k service if the brake fluid isn't changed!

As with everything, there's good and bad.  Some people are very happy with the service their local MrT gives them, others are not.  At the end of the day they're only franchises, and you hear about dealers being stripped of their franchise quite regularly.
