K&N Air Filter

Hi there everyone,

Finally made the decision to swap my Mazda MX5 for an 03 MR2 Roadster and picking it up on Monday - can't wait!  The car already has TTE twin exhausts fitted which is nice as it saves me doing it!  There are 2 qeuestions I have though, and before posting I have tried to find them on the search facility but without any joy.

1)  On my MX5 I had a K&N air filter fitted which provided a great noise, especially in conjunction with the Racing Beat Dual exhaust I had on it.  I have searched through the forums but cannot find any reference to K&N for the MR2 roadster - does anyone know if they are available?  If not which is a popular choice bearing in mind I like it to sound pretty loud!  Also is there a dedicated supplier of accessories for the MR2 Roadster?  On the MX5 there was a place called mx5parts.co.uk which was excellent but I can't seem to find 1 for the MR2.

2) I have some Matrix Torque 16" alloys on the MX5 which I am hoping to transfer across to the MR2 although I noticed that currently the front has 15" and the back has 16" - will 16" on the front and back cause me any issues?  That's bearing in mind that they may not fit at all!

Alot of folks on here use the A'pexi Induction Kit, though there are replacement filer panels available for the stock filter box.

As for the wheels, I sold a set of 15" stock MR2 Roadster alloys to a mate with a MK1 MX5. They are an identical fit. As for 16" all round, you should have no problems – just make sure the rears are wider. I'm sure someone on here can give you the exact tyre sizes you'll need.  s:wink: :wink: s:wink:

As Paul said, you can get a K&N drop in filter to replace the stock item, but as the airbox is enclosed you can't hear it that much. You could fabricate an intake similar to the PPE or Pelican Racing designs (search on those names) and use a K&N cone filter at the end. Out of interest, my new turbo kit uses a K&N cone filter - you can't hear it over the noise of everything else though!

it's in french and english. For more details, get hold of Dieamond, he is also registered on ROC.

In regards to tyres, make sure the rear is wider than the front. I'll have installed 17" TTE very soon, and I have 205-40-17 front and 225-35-17 rear.

I am also interested in installing an K&N air filter. I have my 60.000 km check up soon, and I'll have it done as well!

go for the Apexi, haveing just installed mine last week i can say the noise is just sexy!  s:D :D s:D  

in regards to the tyres, no you wont have any probs with putting the 16's on the car, the pre 03's had 15's front and back, the idea with the different sizes front and back is to get the power down better at the rear by having bigger tyres at the rear, but you can just match the fronts as well. I was speaking to Markiii last night about rear tyre sizes and he recommended just going for 225/40/16's

Guys - cheers for all the responses - pretty much answered everything I needed to know!

Glad about the wheels fitting ok - quite sure they will suit the MR2 nicely!

Probably thinking that the Apexi filter will be the one to go for - will be looking out for one of those now!

took me about an hour to understand the drawings, but once i worked it out probably another hour, only problem i had was the TRD strut brace i have ment that the stock airbox wouldn't come out, so i ended up having to take that off as well  s:? :? s:?

I have a standard K&N air filter, with the 'elbow' from the air box removed. Makes a fantastic sound on high revs...all for less than £50.....

Leave the alloys till you've learnt how to drive this car. Forget about the 'bling bling'. Get some TTE lowered springs on there, far better than allloys....

Kanujunkie - The two links for buying an Apexi power intake doesn't resolve for me just bad link (even via samspade).  Are there any other ways to get to those sites?

It says on their site that the A'PEXi induction kit requires adjustment by an SAFC.  I don't know if "requires" is too strong a word, but it would certainly help.  My short intake design seems to need some fuel management to make decent power.  An emanage or Power FC would also work (both more expensive, but also more capable).

I have a K&N and Top Secret Exhaust. Sounds AMAZING if you can live with the noise.  s8) 8) s8)
